I am going to have to waive porting the heads on my 383 build. Simply cannot afford it. This is the build with the 528 Mopar solid cam, 906 heads and HP manifolds. I decided against the headers, even though I have them, because I simply do not want the hassle. So, how close do you think this is?

Sorry about the size. This is the best I could do without further distortion.

The HP 383s made about 335 IIRC, with a "advertised" 10.5 to one compression, you probally have more actuall compression, that .528 is a good grind, my opinion is that it probally could get close to your numbers, but a cheapy set of headers and I would say for sure. I don't think the porting would be as critical on a 383 as it might would be on a 440, given the same head... just turn a few more rpms.....

I am pretty sure it would make more torque than your sheet shows though.....

Yeah. I have a new set of Dougs headers, but I have decided not to use them. I just don't want the hassle. I am getting too damn old to have to worry about crawlin under it replacing this gasket and that. I want something that will LAST. I've had headers on damn near everything. I just don't want them anymore. Thanks for the input. Remember though, that advertised compression ratio was just that. I am talking about an actual blueprinted compression ratio. The block has been zero decked. The heads will be addressed to get compression right around 10.4......or less if I can do it. I know I will be close to pump gas compression limits, especially since I am not using the close chamber heads for quench. I've done the dynamic calculations and I will be under 8:1 at a static 10.4 with the 528 cam, so I should be ok.

Yeah, I just meant that the factory spec was usally higher than the actual ratio, so your to the good there. I had a 69 383 that was not a HP, but it had about .010 positive deck pistons, IIRC, unported 906s, and a 474 purple shaft hyd cam in it, that thing was a dingle honed backyard special, but it ran strong from 3000 up.. I think your motor will be killer

What's this motor going in????

was the reason you chose that big a cam. to lower compression because I thing you would be happy with a smaller cam and still make the same hp. with stock exhaust man.

Hopefully my 65 Coronet if I am able to keep it. Things are not lookin good at all right now. I was hopin they would have improved, but it's goin the other way. :(

Yes. My original build plan was to use close chamber 516 ported heads. That's why I chose the big Lunasty solid. That and I had planned on 4.56 gears and a loose converter. But the more I think about it, the more I think I'll be happy with something much more street oriented. If I ever get there.

That .528 solid is a lot more docile than you would think......

I am having to use what I have. I have some nice Howards EDM solid lifters, so I want to stick with a solid. Thanks for the recommendation. Lunasty makes some good grinds thanks to Harold. But I kinda wanna try that 528.

This I agree with^^^^. Been there ,done that.Gets too damn expensive. After a while, you want to simply enjoy the damn thing.

what intake you goin with?

should be pretty darn decent if you ask me. will be plenty enough to tool around on the streets

I'm not going to assume what it'll make, other than to say, I bet it'll be a fun and potent driver-exactly what I think you're looking for. Keep at Rob, we'll all be patiently awaiting your final product.

I have a Torker 383. But I WANT an Edelbrock DP4B. I had one and traded it off like a dummy. I think with the smaller 528 and the 3.23 gears it will run better with the dual plane. Shot myself in the foot like I always do.

should run strong Rob. I run a zero deck 383 with a 557 cam and unported hp 915's, 4:56 and 3500 stall ,750 holley and dominator intake and hedman b-body chassis headers.
I know once you get her running, you WILL find a way to add the final pieces. jmo

I think your combo will run great with everything, but I would really think the headers would make a very big addition. I hear you on the headaches and am older also. I have a BB duster with B Body hedders and didn't want the hassle either. I used studs a good gasket and initial good break in procedures and have had very good results with very cheap headers. I ran either way and they make a pretty significant difference. So if you are looking for maintenance free the solid cam doesn't make sense. I have run a ton of these sort of combos, I really like the torker intake. It is smaller volume and high velocity. Its a great intake. With stock manifolds the RPM sweep suffers after 3500 or so.The numbers on the dyno doesn't do the difference between hedders and manifolds justice. There are a lot drivability differences.

I See....In that case... "What do I think"....Rag the ***** together and run it!!!
Keep us posted...
:)

what do I think, I think you know the potential of a stock stroke 383 .
please tell us your original plans and goals of your project.
alot of the younger fellas were not around back in the day, when 383's were a force on the street with proper mods.

If his recent ad in the classifieds is any indication, he was going to run a rather large Lunati solid cam and have his heads worked over pushing about 10.4:1 static CR. I think he's alluded to his would've been build a few times over the past couple years.
