Being the cheap *** that I am, Im thinking on using my old carpet under the new one for insulation
I was planning on trimming back all the points where the carpet meets the edges
and using the old carpet as sound and heat insulation
has anyone done this?????

Lolz, whatever is clever. That silver back HVAC insulation and home depot works good too.

You can get carpet pad for cheap. I bet you can get a bunch of 6 or 12' wide remnants from carpet remnant operations.

Goes under carpet on homes. I have been around that material before. It is good sound deadner and insulation. The only thing is that it probably cannot tolerate over 300 or so degrees but neither can your factory carpet.

X2.....That's what I used when replacing the carpet. 2 rolls for the entire floor @ about $20 per roll.

I'm cheap, but not that cheap. LOL.
My buddy did that on his chevelle and it works.
Youre carpet may feel stiff due to the two layers, but it does the job. Just illuminate any stink on your old carpet.

You will be trapping any dirt and crud that is already in the old carpet so it could cause rust issues in the future. Better off to start with a clean slate.

I agree, find something cheap that acts as insulation rather than using an old dirty funky carpet. That aluminum bubble stuff is nice b/c it wont absorb any moisture ever. It may be a bit of a bitc* to lay down smooth over diverse contours of a floorboard as it is essentially bubble wrap coated with aluminum foil.

I like something tht I dont have to glue down so it can be replaced if needed.

We use the 5/16" bubble aluminum rolled stuff all the time to insulate telecom cabinets.
