Yup I did it strip 1 out of 4 threads that holds my carb on:violent1: i however got a bolt a little longer and got some threads to tighten it up but not much.dont know how long it will last,so could someone tell me what helicoil kit i would have to use to drill the hole tap and then install coil, never done this ya think i can do the job. Thanks for your help.

What about JB Weld?

No, I don't think JB weld is strong enough for that.

Snake, if you can turn your own wrenches, you can install a Heli-Coil.

Here's how you do it:

Go to the store and purchase the proper Heli-coil (I believe a carb stud is 5/16" x 18 threads.)

While at the store ask to buy the proper drill bit needed for the Heli-coil, it should tell you what size drill to buy on the Heli-Coil package. (sometimes these are odd sizes and you need to find a good hardware store that carries them - go to your best local hardware store for drill bits.)

After you get the Heli-Coil kit and proper drill bit, go back and remove the carb from the intake.

Stuff lots of shop rags in the intake to keep out any chips.

Then remove the stud from the bad hole.

Use the drill bit that you purchased for the Heli-Coil kit. Drill out the bad hole.

Then get a tap wrench and tap the hole for the new Heli-Coil.

Then install the new threads with the tool supplied in the Heli-Coil kit. Make sure the Heli-Coil doesn't stick up above the intake manifold surface.

Then take a punch and snap off the flat tab on the bottom of the coil insert.

Now the original bolt/stud will fit in the threads and will be strong enough to torque to recommended torque.

Basically, get a Heli-Coil kit and proper drill.

Drill out the hole.

Screw in the thread insert.

Break the flat tab off on the bottom of the thread insert with a punch.

Now you can use the hole....

Also get rid of the bolts and use studs to avoid stripping out the holes further down the road.

If the nut or screw head takes a 1/2" wrench, it's a 5/16" thread. You can get a complete kit at Auto Parts stores like Auto Zone. Pretty easy fix.

I plan on it the studs would be 5/16 right ? I feel like an idiot

Carb studs MAY be similar to exhaust studs. Ends that thread into intake, then the threads n nuts to tighten the carb down.

I dunno if the holes in the intake are "blind" holes, or go right thru. Make sure no filings get dropped down inside. Good luck!

I have had to do this to my m1 single plane. The PO had two stripped bolt holes. Helicoils are easy and a very good fix. I duct taped the intake opening closed before hand then vacuumed it all up after the fact, remove tape - good to go.

No need to feel that way Snake. I don't think anyone wrenching out there has not had a similar occurrence to deal with.

Or worse. :-D
At least it wasn't an intake to head hole that stripped.
Or worse yet is stripping a head bolt hole.

I recently busted off an exhaust stud in the head, and then snapped the easy out off in the drilled hole. (On the back of the head under all the brake crap.)
Even welded a nut to the end of the stud, but no go.

I'll be changing heads anyway and I put it together with Remflex gaskets under the header flanges, so it doesn't leak anyway.

Ok so i plan on taking on this job near spring, thanks for all the tips and help but just one more lol, I plan on getting the studs been looking at some on line 5 1/6 -18 right but there are different lengths i dont want to end up with 1 that is too short.

Standard base plate carb and single gasket should use 1-3/8" stud package I believe. The 18 thread side into manifold and 24 thread for the nuts.

If a carb spacer is used you'll need to increase for added thickness.

If I am right the short end looks like it does not go to fare down in the intake. Thanks again.
