Hey all i worked for a company for 20 years that was bought out by one of our biggest clients 3 years ago .
Just go the news the building is closing in Oct we new it was coming sooner or later. I guess it's time to move south.

Sorry to hear. Hopefully something will come up in the meantime.

If you don't mind my asking, what type of work do you do? I work with a lot of commercial buildings and manufacturing companies in the NYC/Long Island area. I deal with the facility managers and sometimes hear about job prospects. I wouldn't mind forwarding you any leads I have or may hear about between now and then.

Can't promise you anything, but I wouldn't mind keeping my ears open for you if there's some way I can help.

Hope everything works out for you . Wife lost her job in July , she had worked there 19 years . They couldn't get enough buisness and closed, she still hasn't found a job and her unemployment just ran out.

yes not just 2 weeks or a day's notice

I don't know that's brutal either way. That far off gives you time to look for another job and in this recovery you'll need it. Just a long time to worry about your future. I truthfully believe it's easier to find a job when your employed though! I'd be getting on with the search asap!

Went through a sale with my company last month. Five of us on the site and three got laid off. Life can suck but like they said at least you got notice. Good luck and enjoy the warm summers :)

Sorry to hear about your job troubles....good luck in the hunt for a new one...

I knew some people that worked at 3M in Minnesota, he told me that one day he found out that he was fired when checking his phone mail in the AM. They left messaged for all that they were laying off, instead of having the balls to tell them face to face....

Just a phone mail saying, "Don't come in anymore, your job has been terminated..."

How cold.

Sorry about the bad news.

Hopefully you can get a good severance package if you stay until Oct.

Thanks for all the well wishes.
I needed that.
New it was coming since they took over the company.
They are giving us packages for each year we were employed.

Kinda hard getting a job at 50 tho
Probably gonna sell the car to have alittle back up money just incase.

I was once fired. By a fax. Unsigned. Put in my mailbox while I was out. With my name misspelled. If that's not a record...it should be.

Some companies have gone to terminations by email because they worry about angry people attacking them!

I lost my job last July at 57 years old. I decided in Sept to go for a course and get my class 1 drivers licence. One week after I got my licence I was working. Keep your head up and look at ALL possibilities.

You've got about 8 months, make the best of it, and don't delay searching for a new job. Best of luck, to ya.

I feel for you man.
Being in a industry for 20 years and then having to make a change really sucks. Change often sucks.
I work in construction and we often know when layoffs are coming because the buildings are finished. If you are cut loose before the job is done it is because your "skills" are not up to the task.

Optimists may see your situation as an opportunity to move to greener pastures. I hope this works out for you!

Lately at my work they have been retrenching people......and it is instant, no notice at all.
Makes it hard going to work everyday not knowing if you have a job when you get there.
The wife wants a new dual cab ute, but just can't do it....^^^^^^^^^.

sorry to hear, but on a positive note, getting off the island will probably be a good thing. this place is literally rotting away, personally i can't wait to leave.

seen your car on CL too....really nice ride.

Small advice go get your Commercial Drivers Licence and you will have a job, Go to school now while you are working and find a company where you can take your wife with you in the truck. I work 60 hrs a week hauling fuel for Love's Truck Stops hauling fuel and make a good living doing it and am home every day

If you have medical and dental insurance . NOW IS THE TIME TO GET YOU and the family REPAIRED.
Dental especially.

What type of work have you been doing, and do you want to stay in that field?
I see signs of some "recovery" in our area.

Good advise from everyone.. do not worry about age.. Companies look for someone that knows what they are doing and know how to show up... that last part lets out most of the young people today.. I work in a big body shop and most of our good reliable people are over 55. We would hire more of the older experienced in a heartbeat

One door closes and another opens at times Johnny, count your blessings that they gave
you a good long notice :coffee2: Back in 81 I did electrical work for a big commercial contractor that
bid on big hospital's, collage and manufacturing plants and after 5 years all of the crews showed up early one morning to see a sign on the doors saying leave the keys in the trucks
and we will be in contact by phone on Monday :banghead: No pay check, No notice at all :wack:
This was during the Resetion !! how ever you spell it :eek:ops:, Keep an eye out and wishing you well on the new job hunt, 50 is the new 40 and experience is a good thing :glasses7:
