Haven't seen this as a discussion item..

I need to buy a battery...I have a 360 with a mini dak starter.

What should I be looking for ?

Thanks
ian.

The most CCA's in the smallest, lightest package that you can find.

How many amps is the alternator?

Hi, It is original to the car which had a /6... I am a twit when it comes to electrics..

What would the goal to shoot for in CCAs?

If it is an original car and you want to keep it that way I'd look up with Group Size battery it came with originally. Find the battery with the highest CCA's that fits your budget in that group size.

If originality isn't a concern and you aren't too constrained by what fits the battery tray then as a point of reference I've been driving my 170 Valiant with a Group 35 that has 550 CCA, but bare in mind that I'm on the lower Left Coast where "cold" is 30's F.

:)

When it is cold ( -23C this am) the Duster is in the garage. I suspect we will drive it until the snow flys or the power that be start pouring salt on the roads..

So min 550CCA should be good.

I thank you.

I've seen some of you Cali guys posting about 60° weather already!!! We are still in the single digits and not getting up to freezing yet. We had a "warm spell" in the low 40's a week and a half ago. We were driving around without jackets and the car window halfway down!! Canada is much colder than we are - Shout-out to the Canadians --->>> eh... LOL!

I prefer the most CCA's in the larger stock size battery. The bigger the battery, the more "reserve" it will have (be able to crank a dead car longer than the smaller batteries).

You can get some DieHard gold batteries with up to 800 CCA. At freezing (32° F or 0°C), the battery only has half of its rated CCA. As it gets colder it looses more CCA's. .

Once you get in the single digit °F to the minus teens °F, you turn the key and nothing happens... You think or say out loud, "Cmon baby, start..." Then it starts to crank, and you hear the starter groaning and complaining struggling to turn the engine over slowly. Then she finally fires after cranking longer than usual, and you hear the pulleys and belts squeaking from the cold until they heat up from friction and get a little more clearances and finally quiet down. You feel how stiff everything is for the first ten minutes that you drive.

I used to work at a Sears garage back after high school. They had the mini "Incredicell" battery rated at 650 CCA. The top of the line full size DieHard was rated at 550 CCA. They told us mechanics to test the Incredicell at only 550 amps not 650 on the load tester.

This sparked my curiosity. So I went into the stock room one day and got one of each brand new off of the shelf. Then load tested them at 550 amps, and then 650 amps. The larger 550 CCA battery out tested the little 650 CCA battery and could hold a load much longer than the little Incredicell.

If they get that much power out of a smaller battery, why couldn't they get more out of a full size one using the same technology? More volume = more capacity to store charge. Just like "there's no replacement for displacement"...

And like Rodney Dangerfield used to say:

How many times on a cold, cold morning.... When you really need it... A car and a woman, they won't turn over....

So then what will fit on the battery pan...and my wallet ?

many, with the wind chill it was brutal today....this is totally not what we are used to,,Ottawa, yes but not here..

ian :)

I show an 840 CCA available here for your car. Personally I want the highest CCA I can get when it comes to street driven cars. They also tend to carry a longer warranty too. I just had one replaced for free that was almost 3 years old.

Take a trip to what ever part stores you have and they will have the availability to look it up by application.

Does Nova Scotia have a Walmart? They generally have the best price on batteries around here. Their batteries are made by Johnson Controls. Johnson Controls makes Diehard (Sears), Duralast (AutoZone), Interstate, Kirkland (Costco), Motorcraft (Ford), EverStart and others.

Great. I have a NAPA ,,not crazy about CanTire but they do warranty...Wally Mart..batteries from China ?

Some Walmart batteries are made in China and some are made here in the states. Here is their manufacturing plants in the lower 48.

Any decent "parts guy" can look this up. These were originally "group 24" not to be confused with Ford group "24F" which has a different lower clamp flange, and the posts reversed.

It "used to be" that you needed about as many CCA amps as CID, IE a 400 cube engine should have 400 minimum or more CCA

Go by WEIGHT. If the pimply faced teenager at the discount store gives you the choice of two warrantee batteries, and they weigh about the same, you are getting screwed.

Looks like they are building batteries for the market over there.

Johnson Controls has decided to invest $200 million in an automotive battery plant in Tianjin, China. [1] The state-of-the-art plant will manufacture lead-acid and advanced batteries for start-stop vehicles for automakers and the aftermarket in China. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 6 million batteries which will help the company achieve its target of 30 million in annual battery production by 2017 in China. Construction of the plant is expected to begin in June 2013 and production to start by late 2014.

China’s automobile market
The Tianjin plant will be the fourth automotive battery plant for the company in China after Shanghai, Changxing and Chongqing, and reflects the high demand currently as well as strong future prospects for automotive batteries in China. The country is already the world’s largest auto market, and we estimate the annual production of cars in China to reach approximately 36 million by 2017.

Alert: Sears has changed the way that the warranty the batteries - for what it's worth.

the DieHard gold used to be a "100" month battery. They would give a free replacement for up to 3 years and then pro rate for the duration of the 100 month warranty.

Now they have gone to just 3 years free replacement only. No more pro rating.

Just FYI. Take it as you will...

I'm surprised no one asked about any accesories he has, or plans on.

Real world info ,here....
Don't be afraid ,of Johnson Controls. I sold 7 different brands of batteries, Johnson is one of the better ones(parts guy, less warranty adjustments.) FWIW ,I have a Wal Mart/Johnson battery in my Scamp. Trunk mounted group 27(bigger version of a group 24). It's five years old, kicks like a mule. I never drive it at all,I maintain it with a battery tender/automatic trickle charger. The low steady trickle charge, keeps the battery alive and maintained. I would suggest a good lead based group 24 battery & and a .5-1.5 amp battery tender/trickle charger(automatic shutoff). When the car sits a long time, kills batteries. My .02.

Sears is quickly going under here...we have cut our ties with that company..and my family were very strong supporters but after the last two appliance disasters ( actually, it was the horrible after sales service not the appliance per se but the damn thing didn't work out of the box so we were out a cloths washer for almost 2 months..my wife was absolutely pissed.. ) ,we chopped up our card and sent it in to them..

If you are anywhere near a Costco I would try there. They have a really good warranty on their stuff!

1968.. our membership ran out and it wasn't worth renewing :(

Cold up you way ? Actually, my wife is in Moncton at the mement.

The accessories should not have any affect on how it starts. Only on the load the alternator has to put out to keep up...

(Wow, I said "keep up" and "put out" in the same sentence and didn't refer to a Kardashian...) LOL!

The purpose of the battery is to store charge to start the car. The alternator takes over once the engine is running and supplies all the power to run the engine and accessories and put the charge back into the battery that was used to start it.

get a group 27 or 34 from local Chrysler dealer so it looks as close to o.e. as possible. made by interstate and we have not had any issues since Chrysler changed from exide to interstate. most dealer should sell them for $99 or less with exchange.

Good questions and great reference :)

The car is a poverty car...no a/c. H4s for lights. cannot remember the year of the 360..have it around somewhere..Will have a big stereo but we have a big *** fused wire going directly from the battery to the amps. I hope to run the deck off of one of the wires under the dash..there has got to be one swiched one somewhere :)

Wonder if it is the same in Canada ? does the exchange have to be the same like battery ?
