I recently put headers on to my 72 318 Plymouth duster. I love the sound and performance gains however it is way too loud to have driving around in my city. I've been doing research on mufflers vs glass packs and even then what brands but everywhere says something different. I just want to know my best options from guys who really know. Any help?

Glass packs will make it louder. :sad1:

I like the Dynomax super turbo mufflers. They aren't too loud at idle, but "rumble" when you rev it up. You can go by a cop without grabbing his attention and still have good performance. :D

I'm not a fan of the "flowmaster" sound. :pukerigh:

flowmasters sound too hollow/tinny for me, went with a chambered, welded, 18ish inch cherry bomb on my powerwagon, 2.25 duals in 3 inch tail. sounds pretty meaty and solid. nice rumble at idle and had a nice mid-tone bark on hard acceleration, and it doesnt have that annoying pop/ratty sound on deceleration. I cant stand that. the dart i went the el-cheapo route, because i didnt know what i wanted, besides being able to drive it and not get pulled over every 2 miles, so i opted for 2.25 pipe, with an H crossover right behind the trans, into a couple of ceramic-pack units. instead of having a round hole perforated center with glass packing, it has louvers stamped in a spiral pattern, and is ceramic between the core and the main body. they look just like glasspacks, but sound nothing like them. depending on what way the louvers are facing determines the tone, mine are facing toward the engine, so its surprisingly quiet at idle, but turns into a nice low low rumble tone on light cruising, but without the resonating drone sound that makes for a head pounding headache. heavy acceleration and it comes alive and sounds just plain nasty. im a fan.

I've read that a lot of people don't like the flow master sound... I like cheer bomb glass packs and I can't go wrong with the price but I'm just worried the sound will be too high pitch... I don't want my v8 sounding like some honda civic with a muffler

I had 30 inch glasspacks on my Dart before I put a whole new exhaust system on it, and it was totally acceptable around the neighborhood.

Im a big fan of the Dynomax race bullets. Do a good job at keeping noise down while not backing the gases up.

Dynomax utlra-flo's sound nice and so do Flowtech afterburners. Glass packs in my opinion sound like a high speed cap gun, and only get worse as the go. Even the old Thrush turbo mufflers don't sound all that bad if, and if budget is an issue the Summit knock offs of the dronemaster sound nice. Bottom line it's your car put on what you what you like.

when I bought my car it had glass packs on it, I now have dynomax ultra flo's. Much better sound ! Nice idle and even better WOT !!

For least flow resistance, back pressure and performance, glass packs are the way to go. These days there are some good glass packs like the Ultra Flos that are no louder than Flowmaster 40s etc.

3 general rules, for a quieter exhaust. 1, longer case mufflers, are quieter than short case mufflers.2 the bigger the pipe size: more possible airflow, more probably louder.3 :eek:ver the axle tailpipes work wonders, for knocking raspiness down. What do you have on it,for mufflers now ? We need an idea,of the local yours "too loud " is. A straight up setup,2.5" inch exhaust, with a turbo muffler(Summit/Ultra Flo's / Dynomax Super Turbo),My suggestion.

Both glasspacks and Dynomax Ultraflows are single pass designs, which IMO have the least amount of backpressure. Both work like gun silencers, although the Ultraflow has a gentle S-bend in it.

One of the problems we all face with non-OEM exhaust solutions is there is very little uniformity of enforcing noise limits. There is no federal standard. My state does not have a decibel limit, nor does it routinely equip officers with calibrated sound level measuring equipment. All the state motor vehicle code says is that the car has to have a "working" muffler on it. (FWIW: Federal EPA has noise limits on motorcycles. WTH.)

When the OP says that glasspacks are too loud, is he saying they are too loud for his preferences, or is he saying that he's been told they are too loud by neighbors or a member of the law enforcement community? The Charlotte/Mecklenburg County ordinances are about as vague and subjective as they come. http://scp09.wordpress.com/city-of-charlotte-noise-control-ordinance/ . Good luck
