If you had a McLeod fly wheel that had no external weight on it, and you then put an external balance B&M flexplate on it. Thats your problem. You now have external balance weight where none is required. You likely need a neutral balance flexplate.

So am I needing the B&M plate WITHOUT the moon shape cutout?

that balancer is external balance. w/the b&m plate, and neutral converter, everything should be good. I'm wondering about the steel crank though..........did u balance the rotating assembly?

See that's where I'm not sure. I purchased it already built. I pmd the guy I bought it off of. So I'll know soon hopefully.
 
That is the old style 360 balancer. If the converter is bad it will vib at all engine speeds and gets worse with rpm. I've had a bad converter and figured it out by swapping to a bell housing and fly wheel. Motor ran smooth. Bought a new converter. It must be external balance engine because that is a factory 360 balancer
 
Oh! Forgot to tell you. If you try to trouble shoot your vib by swapping to a bell housing and fly wheel. You'll need an external balance fly wheel. My problem was on a internal balance 383
 
So since it seems we kinda agree its probably the converter......I'm needing a neutral balance (non weighted) converter, correct?
 
Well this may sound strange but at one time I had a vibration and could not locate it. I had the drive shaft re-tubed, new U- Joints and took it to many mechanics and nobody to figure it out. Then one day I was looking at my Fan blades and noticed the were not curved and looked pretty flat so I took the fan off, started my car and low and behold I had no more vibration so I purchased a new Flex Fan from Summit and that was the answer.
 
So, revisiting this after quite some time......After a lot of thinking and car sitting forever. Pretty sure the flywheel that was on it was balanced with the motor as a rotating assembly. So I would need to add weight to my stall to even things out.
 
No, the imbalanced flywheel being balanced with the crank and the harmonic damper is the normal balance process with an external balance engine setup. The imbalance in the flywheel OR TC, and the imbalance in the damper, are there to help the balance of the crankshaft. Any 'evening things out' is between the crankshaft on one hand, and the imbalanced damper, and the flywheel (flexplate) OR TC, on the other hand.

The flywheel used in the balance process can be the one you have (unbalanced) or can be a neutral balance flywheel with the proper weight added at the right spot (to simulate an external balance flywheel OR TC). Similarly, once it is installed in the car, the flywheel OR the TC can be imbalanced but not both.

Too bad the ring gear is not on the flywheel/flexplate or you could start the car with the TC and trans out and check the vibration. If you were nearer, you could borrow our spare /6 TC to test. Maybe someone near has one you could borrow.

Looking at the pix of your damper, I am not so sure it is right. The flat area on the inner ring does not seem to have nearly enough weight removed at that distance from center to be like a regular 360 external balance damper. Look here and check the 360 view to see the normal external balance weight:

Got any info on the damper itself? You refer to flats on 'top and bottom'...are there 2 flats on opposite sides of the inner ring?
 
Before you go to much further, do yourself a favor, drop the fan belt off and start the car up to see if the vibrtation is still there. I was chasing a bad harmonic vibration for a long time, was thinking crank or converter, I had confirmed the correct HB, flex plate, converter weights all correct, it vibrated like a ***** in P, N, D, damn near couldnt see out the rear view mirror, dash would hum,,,,,,, got the better of me took the belts of, turned out to be an out of ballance stator in my alternator, replaced it and smooth as a gravy sandwich!!
