I have this tranny that I got from a buddy awhile back.It is a 18 spline hemi tranny and was converted into a crashbox tranny.It was in a race car for awhile.Then he ran in his street car and said it would great.I am going to pull the side cover off tomorrow and take pics.I thought it was a 70 and later tranny.But now I am thinking a 1968 tranny with a 70 and later B/E tail shaft.

I have a few questions.

1.What year tranny is this?

2.Are the plugs in the side cover stock or did someone modify the side cover?

3.What are the plugs in the side cover used for? I am guessing to get at something in the tranny without taking the whole side cover off.

4.How much do you think I should ask for this tranny if I sell it.I will take the side cover off tomorrow and take pics. that may help on pricing it....

About the cheapest 18 spline tranny I have seen is $900.00

Thanks,Jim

The premium money is in the stock 18 spline ones. ANY modification from stock is, in my opinion, going to REDUCE the value. If it has a liberty gearset, or hemi gears modified by liberty, theres no going back to a syncro assy. Those gear sets are machined, and have a dog ring slider deal welded to them. The old way was to throw away the syncro rings, and grind every other tooth off the dog teeth on the gear. I don't know if a new syncro ring would fix that, but it might work. All this was popular before jericos and other race 4 speeds became common. Even most nostalgia cars use a modern race trans these days....

I do know this one was modified 25+years ago.I will get the side cover off tomorrow.

I'm still learning the some of the trans numbers, but I think the "2366" indicates a build date of Jan, 19 1968 on the main housing...

Yeah, it LOOKS like a 68 front case, with a later B/E housing. I am no 4 speed expert though. One thing that would send a red flag up for me, is that side cover. That thing looks butchered, and the assortment of mismatched bolts isn't encouraging.......That wouldnt make or break a deal, but when I see stuff like that, it usally aint good!

PP= New process
833= 4 speed tranny
2366= Friday Jan 19, 1968 10,000 day calender calculator: http://maxwedge.com/articles/10k.php
0158=the 158 tranny built that day at that plant

8A219005=
8= 1968 Model year
A=Lynch Rd car (Car was a Road Runner, GTX, Coronet R/T, Super Bee)
219005= last 6 digits of vin.

All the gears look nice.There are two what I think are called stop rings that have some wear on them.

Ok, you see the input shaft gear. in the front? that has been machined and had a collar welded to it. It is worn out, and not something that can accept a syncro. That means, really, that box is raced and used up. In my OPINION, all you have good, is the cases halves, and maybe a good cluster gear set. its worth whatever those parts are worth.

Its not even a good candidate for a street rebuild, in my opinion due to the unusable input shaft, and half the dog teeth cut off the gears....and the sliders with cut off teeth. Basically needs everything replaced other than the cluster and case. Maybe someone else will chime in.....like I said, I don't claim to be a expert

so what do you think it may be worth?Their is one gear damaged(clutch sleeve gear maybe)You can see it in the 3rd and 4th pic.

I don't know......If it were mine and I wanted top dollar, I would put it on ebay...

Worn out Race trans -As others have said it is a Parts Trans since it would cost $$$ to get it back to stock.
