I biught a magazine article at the Elmhurst swap meet last weekend of a 66 Dart called the Turbine Dart. I have found some info about it which I will post later when I have time. Pretty cool. I have never heard of this car before. tmm

I love that for $2 you could get an actual record sent of the operation noises. How many of us here remember records? How many have no idea what I'm talking about!
 
Did that thing have an 8 lug full floating rear end? It sure looks like that in the first pic.

There were a few who used those 'in the old days.' Another popular "strong" rear axle in the old drag race cars was the old 57 Olds 3rd member rear axle This was before many Ferd 9" were around, and certainly before Dana 60 came along

The first two pictures are from the few slides my dad managed to save from all the time he spent at Oswego drag raceway. The third and fourth pics were taken at Great Lakes Dragway, photographer unknown( I found these pics on the HAMB).
There is also a you tube video from Oswego in 1968 that shows the dart in action.

Found this and just had to comment. At Oswego Drag Raceway back in inthe later 60's my Dad and I used to go there quite often. That was thefirst and only time I'd seen the "Turbine Dart", But their wasanother car with the same power train there that day. It was a 60's FordMustang called " Pegasus". Lucky for me my Dad brought his 8MMcamera that day and I still have the film of the runs those cars made that day.
It was an overcast day, but can still see the cars run.
There so other interesting things that ran that day also.
I really need to find someone that has the right type of equipment to putthis film to DVD before it goes bad.:cheers:
 
i read an article about these once, the turbine was fed by a premixed fuel and oxidiser, you could run the car with out the turbine on the street and run one, the other, or both at the track, there was a beetle that had one that was quite fast in the day
 
I saw that car run in Indy when I was 9. Hard to forget that thing. Man the other driver and owners were PISSED!! Not Fair!! lol My father and uncles were campaining a old ford coupe. I was at the Drags a lot. sure miss those days of a drag strip in most every town.

So how did this work ? Looks like the turbine spun a backwards mounted pinion. If so, how could you drive it with the standard engine/trans since the driveshaft would need a front mounted pinion...unless there were 2 pinions.....I like it:burnout:

i think the turbine was geared down to run the rear mount pinion, as seen in the add posted above, then the driveshaft drove the u-joint and shaft that ran back to the gear up gears to drive the pinion.

it was basically a quickchange rear end with stupidly low ring and pinion gears(6 to 1 maybe?) so the drive shaft needed a fair but of gearing up to reach a normal rear end ratio, but the turbine needed lots of gearing down to reach a ratio it could drive the car at.
