I finally pulled the trigger and got the heads I wanted.

Upon opening in excitement, I noticed this:

See where the rocker arm shaft mounts in the arched recess? That can't be good, can it? Am I being overly worried, or is this a return/exchange situation?

Thanks!

Kinda hard to see/tell what's going on there, but what I can see wouldn't excite me.

Hard to tell from picture. However I'd send it back.

I'm waiting for the second head to arrive first so I can check it over too, before making any decisions.

And yes, that area is hard to see exactly but it's pitted and porous there, not a clean machined surface.

I doubt it would affect the operation/installation of the rocker gear, but PanGasket makes a good point: the rest of the casting is suspect.

What happened to pride in the products you sell? Must not have rinsed out the beer cans very well.

I wouldn't wait. Contact Edelbrock now. Let them know you have a problem and still waiting on head #2. Mine were perfect. Not sure who QAed that but it's bs to pay that much and get that. Be nice and FIRM!

Yeah, that stand was not fully cast.. If it was they would have had to machine in the shape. I don't think the rest of the head is suspect, but I'd call where ever you got them, send a picture, and have them pay to ship it back. That could potentially cause an issue with the rocker shaft and stability. It shouldn't have passed QA.

Looks like the mold was kinda screwed up there. I can't believe it passed inspection! Edelbrock is going down the drain. I actually considered going with a Chinese head. From what I've heard and what I read in the thread noted above, The Chinese heads are just as good as Eddy's. You'll need to do some machining anyways with either so I'd rather save the extra couple hundred and use it towards machining. If Eddy's were better quality and closer to a bolt on out of box part then I would spend the extra for American made.

It goes like this:

Box one is loaded with manure and has an American flag on it. Price - $1200
Box two is also loaded with manure but with "Made in China" stamped in it. Price - $700

That's the way it looks to me.

Castings can have spots that don't clean up most anywhere on them.
You can bet they throw out a few.

Send them back. The only way things are going to improve is if people stop accepting sub-standard products. If enough people start returning these heads, they will hopefully improve the QA process and everyone benefits. If people keep accepting crap, then crap is what they will keep making.

The tiny little spot that I can see on this head doesn't deserve the hammering I'm reading in my opinion.
If it is sent back it will be sold again. We might even see it ebay... with a discount and without mfgs warranty of course.
And by the way .. Recon the Chinaman would just Keep cutting it down until it did clean up ? I would bet on it. Want a thinner head or it's geometry fudged ?
I know for a fact that American Mfgrs cannot pay their help to run the same part repeatedly. I'll bet they toss those nearly completed heads for a tap broke off in them. China would not. Their labor cost is much less.
Lots of parts can't be ran in CNC a second time anyway.

I wouldn't accept that.
As a matter of fact, i would be wild that they actually tried to sell me that p.o.s.
Where the hell is their Q.C.?

I agree its crap...for the money you spent seems they would send you a quality part,it may not hurt anything but it's blemished and a 2nd rate part, that's not quality by no means..send it back, but 1st I'd be on the phone raising hell and sending pics...no pride in workmanship and quality control is apparentely next to none...dont feel bad,get mad

Send it back. that material missing in the half-round for the rocker support is unacceptable. It will not support the rocker shaft properly, especially on an end. The half-round is to support the rocker shaft from side to side movement, and most of it is missing in the one side. Now think how much it can move when you have valve spring pressure on it and revving it up.

If the machine operator for that operation didn't catch this defect, then the final unloader should have seen it when he unloaded and packed the head for shipping. It's called "final inspection". The guy who unloads the part from the machine line is supposed to do a visual check for defects on all parts. Period!

You paid too much money for that head to accept that bullsh!t. Return it.

made in the USA - he was texting while inspecting...lol.

That might explain it....
lol!
That kind of flaw/defect isn't what he paid for.
I would send it back an tell them to shove it up their A double s's........:violent1:

I just added the pic to my collection of "hack" work pictures.
