direct tv or Dish

-
I had dish for years and got tired of loosing the signal every time the weather was bad .
I changed to Comcast similar to direct and even in bad weather signal is good.

Great (and timely) question. I'll be following your thread with interest as we are in the process of moving where there is no cable...

I can't say anything about Dish network, because I've never had it. Direct TV sucks! No, wait....they suck with turds on top of them. Well....actually they suck worse than that! :mumum: We left Charter for Direct TV, and that was the longest and worst 2 years of TV in my life.....and I don't even like TV much. If it clouded up to quick...it got grainy. If it rained, it would come and go. If it snowed? :banghead: I'll just say I'm shickled titless to be back on Charter.

Direct isn't any better.
Right now I don't see anything better than an internet connected TV out there.
This includes Netflix and everything else the internet has to offer, and you can even go to FABO on it. :D

I have Dish since I live in the sticks and Comcast isn't out here! I have friends with Direct TV that don't like it, but they probably both suck! LOL!

I've had em both, now neither. But to answer your question, if I had to pick one, I would say dish. They suck a little less than Direct TV. I would give up TV before I would go back to direct TV. Think about it. Why do they require you to enter a contract to do business with them? Because they know they suck, and you would switch to another provider if you could. But you're gonna be stuck for two years. Have you considered VHF? You may not be aware, but the signal is much superior to what it used to be. It is even available in HD. Combine that with netflix, and you can have all the tv you need for $8 a month.

In summary, they both suck. But Direct tv sucks a lot more.

I've had both. (On Direct now) Flip a coin. When the contract runs out on one, I switch to the other to get the switch deal, and also upgrade to new equipment. I still suffer outages at times during bad weather, but as the equipment improves, it seems to be less frequent.

I like Direct, and dont like Dish. Maybe it just familiarity but I cant stand using Dish when I go back home to see my mom. I do agree though that when the weather sucks it dont matter who you have for satellite you will loose the signal. On that note, I will never go back to Comcast! They are by far the worst to deal with and constantly jack there prices around. Every month I had to call them for 2 years to get my bill straightened out.. I'll take the lost signal over that any day!

I've had both. yes issues with weather, state of Missouri sued direct few years ago, for "bate and switch" stuff, Mo won. I say direct is a bigger bag of scum than dish but that's not saying much!! LOL contract. I told direct, show me the da--ed contract as-h---.
kiss my rebel ***!!!! (that's a south ga thing)
I wonder why the fed govt has no control over these companies!?????
just me.

I used to install both Dish and Directv. Direct is Much better. I was always going out for service calls for dish. Equiptment sucked and too complicated for both the installer and the customer. I have had Directv for over 10 years now. I hardly ever have a problem with it, even in bad weather. The key to them is to get the signal in the high 90's and make sure the fittings are sealed from the weather. Many installers use cheap crimp connectors that get wet and corrode and then the signal weakens (in good weather) but when it rains the signal is really weak and you lose picture.
I installed my Directv here at my house almost 8 years ago and have not touched it since except to add a tv.

I've been with Dish since they started. Both lose signal in severe weather. I used to be able to call customer retention and threaten to move to Direct and they would take $15 to $20 month off my bill for 6 months or give me free programming but now they just say they are sorry to see me go. The price keeps going up but so do groceries and gas for the car so what do you do.Depends on how important certain programs are to you. Talked to a lot of people when I was Rving....50-50 split on which is best.

Im looking at the 200 and 205 package.Cant decide

So after all these responses your answer should be as clear as mud. This is sorta like talking politics. I have had Dish for about 14 years. Yes we lose the signal when a real bad storm is about 20 minutes away. Typically when the signal goes out the storm will be bad enough that you wouldn't want the TV on anyway. Bad snow will kill the signal. The other 98% of the time there is no problems here. I have shopped Direct TV. Not enough price savings to make a difference. I know too many people who got screwed by Comcast and their bundling. I would never go down that road.
As a side note, I had Hughes Net satellite internet a few years back. That satellite service absolutely blows. I paid the penalty to get out of that contract. So I guess the answer is-Roll the dice and see what you end up with.

Direct TV is what I have and don't have any problems.

They are both the worst of 2 evils...I was a dealer for both, home and RV. Tried to tell people the big dish was still better. You know both Direct and Dish are re-broadcast off the big dish.
Digital, it's just compression,it's a joke, and the viewer thinks it's cool. The big dish still had the best picture, you could see it watching side by side.Never went out in bad weather.Sometimes you had to brush the snow off if you didn't have a cover.
25 differnt programers, no contracts, nice packages for $29.00. But people wouldn't listen, and it's pretty much dead now.
To answer your question, Direct is the better of the 2 worst scams.

Thanks for all the replies.I live in the country. My dad was staying here and he took all his boxes. He has direct. The only thing was when it rained you lost signal.I got the dish and Wiring already wired through the walls.just need the boxes.

I may be doing the same (moving to an area with no cable service) Has anyone tried Verizon FIOS? I will be looking to go with TV, internet service and maybe phone. I have had Adelphia/Comcast for well over 20 years without serious issues. It sounds like the other services will be a giant set backward from Comcast.

I tossed a set of rabbit ears on the roof and get forty channels with a cable quality signal. There's some channels you'd expect to find on cable only too. Like ME TV and antenna TV and ION. It kind of sucks when the Broncos are playing an ESPN game but I could buy season tickets with the money I save.

Tell them you up the lastest upgrade (slim setup is what its called if I'm not mistaken). I had my Dish on the roof for years, but moved it to the a pole 6 feet off the ground so I could easily clean it (snow, ice, etc).

I switched from local cable to Direct last October cause of the big incentives they had but have been kicking my self in the *** ever since. Can't comment on Dish cause I never had it but Direct sucks IMO. I stuck an antenna on the roof and get about 30 channels free. As soon as the trial period is over Direct is getting the boot and I'm gonna buy a rotator and a dvr cause there's over 50 channels within my range I can get free if I just have a rotator.

Agree 100% Ariel antenna only. We watch METV a lot. We do pay 10 buck per month for NETFLIX through the WII console.
If you're sports nut you'll need a subscription to some service.

I have Direct TV and had dish.. I love my Direct TV no isues at all and I had only called Customer Service once and that was when I upgraded to HD.. If it storms and you lose your signal just go into the dvr and pull up shows you recorded and watch them.. No problem at all.

When I had dish and had a problem and called them for help they charged $5 a call to help you.. I wil l never do that again... I am in my 8th year with Direct TV and have no plans on ever using anyone else. If you start to get it let me know and I will give you my account number so when you sign up you and me will get $10 off our bill each month for 10 months. You have to use my account as a reference before you sign up.

I have dish. An hour long episode of gunsmoke is now an hour and ten minutes. They have add that many more commericals, and charge more on top of it. I am going to go the netflex route. will miss my racing, but will save about 800 bucks a year and watch 45 minute episodes of gun smoke.

And they shortened the actual original show by 10 min. too

It isn't just Dish that has the added commercials. I have Directv I get Gunsmoke on TVLand and I noticed all the extra commercials too. Same goes when Andy Griffiths on. Sometimes a 1/2 hr Andy Griffith show will run nearly 45 minutes :tongue2:. Those old 1/2 hr shows generally ran between 20 and 25 minutes so that means nearly 50% of the time it's on is commercials. That's BS! Good thing I have a DVR to record things so I can bypass the commercials.
