I'm considering this air cleaner by edelbrock hoping to clear my hood?
Has anybody used this type and how good of job does it do?

LOL the firestarter. Had one of those, no bueno.

Get a 'drop base' or 'recessed base' air cleaner on amazon, you'll be a lot happier, got mine for $30. They drop further anyway.

Do you have issues using a drop base? I have never ran a cleaner like that though so I'm no help.

X2! Those foam filters are good for removing the paint from your hood. LOL! I built a drop base and use a 1 piece filter with filter top. I also use a 1'' carb spacer and it fits under my stock '63 hood. :glasses7:

I like the idea of building my own drop base, I may use the foam until I get the the the car and hood out of paint shop.
I have enough old breather and sheet metal to fab it the way I want it.

Thanks..

i had to use 2 of them in my 1973 duster

you can get a no name 1" drop base for next to nothing they are actually cheaper than a standard set up , I got mine with a 14x3 filter for 25 bucks . I use the Mopar lid with mine so it looks correct and it all fits under the hood of my 69 fastback with and Airgap and a " spacer under the carb .

I have always liked the look of those chrome screen filters. But will never own one. I saw one on a car at a show and noticed that the foam had hole in the center all the way through to the carb where it was falling apart.

Dont usr the Edelbrock, youre asking for a fire!

Then once you think you're good, you discover the plastic frame under the filter melted onto carb butterflies and when you start it you discover the engine wants to really rev!! Been there done that about 25 years ago!!

Hey thanks for the info guys.... now I'm pretty sure I'll go with a drop base of some type.. I don't like fire..

One backfire and the foam crystallizes and ends down your carb and into your engine. no thanks. Love the Why-And in the photos. Just like Ed-l-brock not Elde-brock. tmm

Another big No from me. A friend had one on his 66 Barracuda. He wound up with a nice black basketball sized design in the middle of his shiny red hood!

Don't do it.....you'll def be sorry.
The drop bases are the way to go whether you build or buy one, for sure.

ill add to the general consensus, with an all caps rage rant of fury, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE PLEASE DEAR GOD DO NOT NOT NOT USE THAT THING!!!! :D ive seen 2 rigs burn to the ground from those damn things. that and if theyre held up to the light....the realy dont filter jack squat besides raccoons and small children......for filter selection just remember, more folds per inch equals more surface area. so a smaller filter doesnt necessarily mean the engines going to choke in the top end. the average economy wix (napa silver) 14 inch filter has around 2.5 pletes per inch, the napa gold, 8-10ish. HUGE difference. smaller variants are very similar. i run a 10 inch filter in my early-a, with a m-body cop car intake, (approx .5in. higher than a standard intake) a 1 inch phenolic spacer, flat base, NOT drop base, and a 3 inch tall filter, it clears with ease. without the worries of it being too small or restrictive. most air filter size calculators can be a useful tool to guide you. it seems most of the drop bases ive ran have made my rigs a turd on the bottom end, enough to be noticeable anyway. anyone remember or run a substack or the k&n flow-top air filter housings? the more direct the airflow, the better.

In high school, three cars I rode in had these damn things (including mine). Nothing quite like watching your paint burn on your hood.........

Ok... I'm convinced... but now Here is one brand new, still in box, never been used and won't be.. not on my car.
It's for sale to hang on the wall in your man cave... garage or in the fire hall.... any takers???? But it won't be cheap because it's a real horror story collector item! :-({|=
