I put a new fuel pump and lines on my duster tonight and it won't suck gas out of a jug! I took the pump out again with all the rubber lines still attached and pumped it manually (had to push pretty hard) and it sucked gas out of the jug and shot it out the end!! Any idea why it wouldn't pump when installed??

Patience. You need to ,to check out fuel flow,to the pump first.(Check the factory lines, for leaks to start....). It's basic,,take your time

Do you for certain have the correct pump for the correct engine?

you did not say how many miles the motor has on it ?remove the fuel pump and with a flash light make sure the eccentric is not damage. You may have too remove the timing chain cover to get a better look and replace the eccentric. this is what drives the fuel pump.#

one way to test if the eccentric is bad, after you have removed the pump stick you'er finger or a screw driver in the hole and see if you can jiggle the eccentric a round it should not move at all, over time the mounting hole can get hogged out and they need too be replaced (remove timing chain cover) too repair it .. tell me what you find out #

there is a little rod that has to be held up just a bit so the pump lever can get under it. this is what drives the pump. if you don't do this the pump lever will miss the rod and not pump.

It's not hooked up to the steel lines and tank. I just ran rubber lines from the pump to the carb then one from the carb to a gas can.

I have no idea on the mileage. It was a drag car in the 80s/90s then 2 owners b4 me bought it off the track and it sat for 20 years then he sold it to another guy who never touched it and I bought it from him.

I reached in and felt the eccentric and I could wiggle it back and forth... That mean it needs replaced?

............maybe the bolt just needs tightening........likely, their cheap or free used from another member.........kim........

Are we talking about a SB? If so you say it was a race car? If they ran a electric fuel pump, they may not have even built the engine with a eccentric bolted to the cam?

Ok thanks. I'll pull the pump again n see what it looks like inside. Pretty sure I could feel it tho. I could feel something that I thought felt sorta like a can lobe then I'd turn the engine by hand and it would go away. I'll

The eccentric is in there... BUT I can reach in with my long, boney, middle finger and both wiggle it back and forth AND make it spin. That mean I need to take the front of the engine apart??

I think so!! Sounds like its too loose to catch the notch and keep it spinning with the cam!! I think you'll have to operate, Doc!!!

Rats... Well, ig I might as well put in a new water pump while I'll have it off anyway.

this guy has never worked on Mopar LA motor's it's the eccentric #
...no rod !!!! i think he is thinking GM

before you pull the timing chain cover make sure you have a pully -puller for the Crank pully if you can afford it this would be a great time too change the timing chain and gear's good luck and keep us posted on how it goes .. i have built a bunch of 318's if you need to know any thing else just ask.. if the eccentric has a grove in it replace #

I do have a pulley puller but I don't have a socket big enough to take out the center bolt in the crank puller so I'm stuck on that right now. I also found a bunch of junk when I pulled the water pump (see this thread http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=274463 ) so I gotta deal with that too. Should I concentrate on getting it running or flush it b4 I take the timing cover off?

Thanks acdragon, I'm sure I'll have tons more questions as I continue working on this thing.

I would put a double roller timing chain when a apart as acdragon mentioned.. Also I would put a 8 finned impeller water pump they cool better.. You are very lucky that you were not running an electric fuel pump... If that cam gear came off while driving down the highway you would have had some serious engine damage... A real good thing you found it...But it makes me question the rest of the car and engine... How good was the guy you bought it from as a mechanic...Bill
