Geez what is with the prejudice against bench seats

-
I lost my virginity on a bench seat in a 71 Duster many years ago! When I converted my Dart from bench to buckets, I couldn't give the bench away and ended up hauling it off to the dump. I put 68 buckets in with new/repaired springs and while they sit fine, they offer no lateral support. If I try to go around a corner too fast, it feels like I'm going to fly off the seat!

I've got no problem with bench seats. I use my car for everything from cruising to racing, even tow a small camping trailer with it.

The bench allows my room for six when I need it, and also allows my best girl to sit next to me when we're cruising.
When I'm racing, the extra seat space isn't an issue at all.

I'd love to have a bench seat, with center arm rest back in my car. The PO. took it out and put buckets and console.

I love the bench in my Dart. Nothing like banging gears with you girl by you side. Lighter weight than buckets too.

I love bench seat cars, I have four, all 1970 models.

My Barracuda had a bench seat from the factory. But I found correct buckets in the junkyard and put them in when I first got it, and used the mint bench as a couch in my apartment. Then a neighbor talked me out of the bench -- he needed it for his car. Years later I started looking for another split bench with armrest, since I decided the column shift looked lame with the buckets, and they desperately needed reupholstering. I couldn't find one anywhere local, and nobody wanted to ship the monster. I finally ran into a guy at a show that had just finished a restomod -- he had had the bench recovered, then changed his mind and put in buckets. So I bought his newly restored bench for his cost (which was considerable -- it was a big-budget project).

But here's what I found out -- with beaten-down factory buckets, even though I'm 6' 1", I could have worn a ten gallon hat when driving. With a brand new overstuffed bench seat, my hair is grazing the headliner with the seat all the way back. That is not acceptable. I fabbed up some adapters to move the seat tracks 3-1/2 inches back, but I think I'm going to have to take it back to the same upholstery shop and have them take some stuffing out, because it's only going to be maybe 3/4 inch lower -- it's hard to drive when your eyes are level with the rearview mirror -- it blocks a huge swath of your vision. I haven't installed the adapters yet because the car went to the body shop while they were in progress.

Because right now I'm looking for a seat cover for a temporary fix for my Wife's 73 Comet.

You think I can find one without spending 140 bucks! :banghead:

I prefer buckets, but I like bench seats too. It just depends on what I feel like doing. Cruising or cornering

Old Car = BENCH Seat if it was FACTORY. besides, they were good for a bed, if you needed to get away, amoung other "bed" related things, and if not a bed, a place for her to rest her chest while stretched out with her head lying in yer lap when goin down the road, (if ya git my drift)

Buckets don't promote such things.............easily!

Can't see it in the pics, but when I had the Valiant's seat redone I asked the guy to carve the foam under the driver to be a bit of a bucket. The "bolster" foam is denser than the middle foam as well. Not as good as a real bucket, but it seems like only yuropeon cars makers really understand how to make a bucket seat, and why.

I prefer bench seats over buckets, i find that you sit higher.
I'm a short ***, and buckets i find seat you a lot lower than i like.
The only reason my Dart Sport has buckets in it is because that's all i had at the time with decent upholstery in white.
I might change it back one day......

x2 on date night - bench seat, freshly saddle-soaped...a hard right turn (nobody wore seat belts back then) and boom, your date was right next to you. :)

Friend of mine put a single, full width seat belt in for his bench seat. When his GF was stand-offish (& it was safe!) he'd just tighten the belt!

hum.......

my 67 barracuda coupe came factory with a bench, but by the time i got it, there was no seats in it, so i opted for 67 buckets and a 4 speed no console

That's the way it came, and that's the way it stays, besides the wife and I are close to the same height, so any adjustment is a notch or two.

I almost replaced my bench with buckets, but then I got to thinking that the benches are sorta rare nowadays. Nothing I know of aside from a pickup has an available bench seat. Maybe a Lincoln or similar, but a bench in an old 'muscle car' does it for me!

I had mine recovered in the original vinyl. And I'm thinking of adding a B&M Starshifter to the floor:burnout:

X2 Love bench seats with fold down arm rest.

And that's why I got one for my Duster!:) it's out of a 74 Duster and has the high back seats!! I have it sittin on the shop floor and the other day I sat on it and those high backs are super comfy!!

That's exactly why I told my wife that once we get her a Duster hers is gettin buckets!! She's 5'1 and I'm 6'4!! No way I'd fit on the passenger side of a bench with her drivin!! Lol

My 69 Swinger 340 is a 4-speed bench seat car and I LIKE IT!!!!

any way i could get a photo? i have a plan that involves a 4speed with a pistol grip and i want to know how it would fit. i havent put any thought to how i want the seating situation to work out until i saw this thread

i have a 71 comet that used to have tore up bench seats. i ended up buying another comet for 600 and swapped the interior. the wrecking yards around usually have a couple mavs or comets that have decent benches. sometimes...

I am 5`5". When I started driving my Dart I could not understand why I could not reach the peddles very well even with the seat all the way forward.

Then I got to thinking. The guy I got it from was 6'9". So I looked under the seat and sure enough he had some spacers under the front mounts to kick the seat back and give him more head and leg room.
