x2 on date night - bench seat, freshly saddle-soaped...a hard right turn (nobody wore seat belts back then) and boom, your date was right next to you. :-)

Friend of mine put a single, full width seat belt in for his bench seat. When his GF was stand-offish (& it was safe!) he'd just tighten the belt!
