It is hard enough for me to remember what I did last year but trying to remember what my son did when we took the car apart...no way.

Problem....we are installing the steering shaft ...

We did not lose the pin that holds the shaft to the power steering unit and the coupler was not taken off the shaft..btw, we will paint it later.

We have gotten so far..

I think the coupler has to go down much farther...but it is not moving...do we take a rubber mallet to it and motivate it lightly ?

Second question...when we were plugging the wires connecting to the steering column, we notice that an orange wire has been disconnected.....the only think we can think of is the original owner put a fm/cassette deck into it...could this have been for lighting or power ?

Thanks as always..

Ian.

There is a master spline, Its much larger than all the other splines. You have to make sure that they are lined up or it will not go on. Once that is lined up it should slide on all the way.

As for the connector. If it was a steering column wire, that was probably for the key light. Its a single connector. A pic of that wire might help.

Ok...so a) the spline should have some grease on it b) we back off the coupler a bit and rotate the steering wheel until we feel it mesh..

i don't remember there being a key lite on the car...should there be one ?
There may be an opps here... I rebuilt the column and didn't notice a light..I can provide a picture tomorrow.

Thanks , Ian.

Yikes...we may have to pull the shaft out again..but this is perfect info...didn't see this in the manual..

Thanks
ian.

You shouldnt have to pull it out, just rotate it around you will feel it when it drops in correctly. Once you get it dropped in if it dont go all the way in, then you can tap it in with a mallet, but make sure you get that spline set first.

Was the column for a column shift? If so it's for lighting the shifter selector. Otherwise it's not used and would not be plugged into anything.

Crumbs, yes...

It was a column **** that I converted because we have gone to a console shift..

Good call.

With the steering gear centered straight ahead the master spline will be on the top. The coupler has a tiny notch it the outer leading edge relative to the naster spline location inside.
If you got it started on at all the master spline is probably right.
You're not the first to fight this coupling. Look at recent threads for comments about how the coupler often binds at cutaway for the cross pin and how to make it easier.
