68 318 or 79 360

I would go with the 360 for the same money but you will have to buy some things a s mentioned but it would be a better base engine if you decide to go bigger later.

I bought a 360 and 727 trans out of a 86 ramcharger 2 wheel drive and put in my duster also put an 8 3/4 rear in and the drive shaft from the ramcharger fit without any modifications

The driveshaft and rear end, both were the right lengths and didn't need to be modified at all? Did it have a 4.5" bolt pattern, I wonder if they made very many 2wd models? Before I get off on a new tangent, I know I can use the driveshaft and rear end from the donor car. As long as the two transmissions are the same. The donor car still has the drive train, 76 318 with 727 but has no carb and no hood open to the rain for 10 years. I might buy the trans to rebuild someday if he'll sell it to me cheap enough.

He didn't mean that the 8 3/4 rear end came out of the ramcharger. The last year for the 8 3/4 was '74 (I believe) for the trucks. He was saying that with an 8 3/4 rear end, drive shaft from the ramcharger fit with the above mentioned tranny. Remember, 727 and 904 are different lengths in the tailshaft requiring different length drive shaft. Also, an 8 3/4 rear yolk will be closer to the tranny than a 7 1/4 yolk, requiring a shorter drive shaft.
