exhaust washers

Not used on the center two bolts. Just the four outer fasteners. (that might have changed over the years...not sure)

bear with me...they are concave.
...i'm still not clear....hollow side faces out?

I believe the hollow faces in. In my mind they are designed that way to spread the clamping force out.

The curved side goes outward toward the nut, not the engine.

Search www.slantsix.org tech articles. There is a detailed one w/ photos. If you install the washers wrong, both round and triangle ones, the exhaust manifold can crack. Next time, tell us what car and engine you have. I am assuming from the question that it has a slant six engine.

...69 340.
still confused....the nut does not seat in the hollow , but on the convex (hump) side.

Double yes. The Larger rounded part (hollow side) goes toward the manifold to disperse the clamping force over a larger area.

If you are using studs on the end holes be sure to use some thread sealant as those holes are wet.
