What would cause this??????

Pull the innards of the cable out. If it still in one piece lube it up....have had dry cables do all sorts of weird things....

^^^ This! I have had them do all sorts of weird things too.....Not moving at all, needle bouncing erratically , making noise, reading twice the speed it should and making noise only when cold, when warm it was fine.....if the cable is sticking in the sheath it can do all sorts of things.....even if you are not moving....the stored up energy can unstick itself even when not moving
