Trim Ring Difficulties

A while back I bought on Ebay a set of 2944424 trim rings. I was pleased because the price was relatively fair but still substantial. His story was that they were NOS when he got them and he had them on the car for a month then went with another plan.
My only disappointment with them was that you could tell that he had whacked them pretty hard when installing them since the edges had some small dents.
FF to today when I'm installing them. I can't get these things to fit right. They are not sitting evenly on the wheels. Tried all of the rings and all of the wheels with the same result. No matter what I do there's always too much space between the ring and the wheel in some area.
I'm looking for ideas before I bring these to the beach for high-dollar frisbees. Are they the right ones? They sure look correct to me. Maybe my wheels are not the genuine 1970 Duster Rallye wheels? The pictures on the left are of the rings that came with the car (history unknown). Since they are not brushed on the inside I don't think they are "correct" (also notice the valve stem opening) however with the usual couple of whacks with your palm they fit perfectly, yet even with the C36374899 trim-ring installation tool that I invented I have given-up hope that I can get these to fit.
Also notice in the pictures the difference in the number and size of the "clips" that hold the rings on.
