So this is what we do in Southern Maryland for recreation and tradition. About once a week in the summer I'll get out and run a trott line off of my 17ft ctr console to catch the famous Chesapeake Blue Crab. Since I don't have a commercial licence , I can only run 1200ft of line. I'll still usually catch at least a bushel of these guys in about an hour and a half. The other reason to crab for yourself is because, price-wise, they are getting out of hand. Right now a bushel of no.1 jimmy's can bring about $150 live , $200 cooked. I've never sold a crab though. I just pick out all the big boys and give the rest away to family and friends.

The boss of the house is bringing a bushel of crabs back to Tennessee on Monday. She is the only woman I have ever dated that ate dinner with a wooden mallet.

I go blue crabbing w dad in N.J. A couple string lines and chicken bones along with a net, in a couple hours we got enough to boil. If you flip em over and look at the underside the femalse shells are shaped a bit different than the male. If we catch females we toss em back in the bay. Plus N.J. Requires you to toss em back if they are smaller than a certain size point to point on the main shell. We have a plastic gage that measures point to point if the shell is at or over the point to point you can keep the crab, if its less you need to toss it back. The game warden actually stopped while we were crabbing, and checked our catch to make sure we werent taking undersized ones.

I got to talking with her about handguns, and she says, you arent from around here are you. I said no Maam i am not. I'm from Texas. Also told her i feel, naked without being able to carry my side arm while in N.J. LOL what a funny conversation.

when I read the title I was afraid this might be a little to personal of a post

when I was a kid growing up in the Netherlands I would spend hours on the beach collection mussels which I would then sell to the tourist :)

don't see kids do that type of stuff anymore these days

Maryland Crab Cakes. you just can't beat 'em! (And they think New England style Lobsters "good". can't hold a stick to Maryland Crab Cakes!)

And I grew up in Pennsylvania! LOL

That looks like fun, Mitch.

Memike , crabbing makes for a fun afternoon.

chicken bones , some kite string and a net is all ya need, and a little patience. We have a nice dock in the bay, where we do this at. We toss in and tie off about 10 ,lines. One line tied off each piling. You leave the lines in the water about 10 minutes or so, then slowly pull the lines in. Ya gotta be quick with the net, because they will let go.

We go with a tall bucket that we put ice and salt water in to keep em alive for the trip home.

I actually run a Trott line. Which is 1200ft long with chicken necks tied to it about every 9 ft. It is weighted down with about a foot of chain on each end to hold it down on the bottom. Also on each end is a buoy so I can locate the end of the line. My boat is rigged with a PCV pipe fabricated in the way of a hook assembly, which hangs over the side of the boat. I start at the end of the line by grabbing the line just in front of the buoy and hooking it over my PCV hook. So, as I go down the line, it comes up off of the bottom with crabs attached to SOME of the baits. As the get up to the hook, I net them with a steel net. As I continue down the line, it goes back down to the bottom for more crabs on the next run. Can usually catch a bushel in 8-10 runs down the line. It is fun, but I see the commercial guys out there crabbing every day. I don't think I want to do it for a living. LOL

Sounds like you got a really cool setup there. We dont have a boat so we just do this off the dock. Its a good time just dad and i relaxing in lawn chairs talking , and pulling in crabs. Since i live in dusty and dry west Texas, i like to get out by my folks at least once a summer, and enjoy the beach , and go crabbing w ole daddy o.
