Got the Position!

I am impressed by the fact that 1. you have a woman welder and 2. you have a welder that was doing jail time. It takes a forward thinking person to give people a equal start when doing a job.
Let the super skilled teach the weaker skilled. Also look and see if any of your tradesmen are left handed. This could save a challenging welding job for you.

Hi Michael,

Actually I'm left handed and can weld with both. Lol
I write left handed and throw, use scissors, etc with my right hand, so welding with both come natural, even TIG with both.

Congratulations. When you have experienced dissatisfaction with your work, having a rewarding job is a great feeling.

UPDATE:

3 days into it and so far so good. I worked m-w and got thursday off for the holiday (4 day weeknd)!

Have a few problems but they are expected. The former supervisor, who I'm training under, is very hesitant to show me anything in detail. He's very vague in his training and tries to take shortcuts so he doesn't have to show me the "right" way of doing things. At least I'm smart enough to notice that. So, I have to ask my supervisor the correct way of doing them. (Using programs to check shopclock and syspro.)

Some other things he does/doesn't do really bug me as well. He'll disappear for an hour or so at a time with nowhere to be found. He also won't say anything to those who are under him to keep them on track on jobs. I've observed this myself. He'll hide behind weld curtains and stuff and just peek out to see if anyone is standing around chatting/getting distracted and not in their area doing their job........and what really irks me is then he dings them on their reviews for it!!!

Now, I know many of us are just hard workers and stay focused to get the job done; however, we know there are some that need continued poking and prodding, as they are a little immature yet; a little more babysitting you could say.

Example: the one kid I mentioned earlier, who was in prison, turned 23 yesterday. He's still a bit immature and gets distracted easily. However, he's a darned good welder/fabricator and has TONS of potential. He needs someone to push him and make sure he stays the course on his task.(He'll eventually get the point soon) Several times I would stop to talk to him and within a few minutes, the former supervisor would pop his head out from behind a curtain and stare at us. (I don't care as I'm the new supervisor and he's going to day shift in a couple weeks). Well this kid's review is up and this idiot supervisor gave him a bad review(I read it yesterday) because he said he stands around and talks too much!! Well of course you friggin nincompoop you never stopped to try to correct the actions!!! Man this makes me mad, lol. So now, this kid isn't getting a raise he voiced he was hoping for and is going to be devastated on Monday when he gets the review. I mean out of 110pts he gave him a 66. (the score is based on 12 or 14 grading criteria rated from 1-7pts)

The same kid on Wednesday, I saw out of his work area as he went to help someone move something, started just standing and chatting.....it just happens, we all know from experience. So, I walk over there and pull him back to his work area and have a word with him. I proceeded to tell him that there are people above me who watch what we're doing (there are security cameras in the shop now used for the wrong reasons). I then let him know that he's impeding his own progress of becoming one of our top fab/welders and the company's progress by not staying in his work area and keeping his hood down. I told him I'm not trying to be a dick, but I have his and his career's best interest in mind and that I want to see him succeed. He actually thanked me and told me he understood.
The next job I gave him had 6.25hrs to complete start to finish. I told him that I wanted it done by the end of the night and there was only 5hrs left in the shift....but you know what, he stuck to his table and hammered that job out in 4.75hrs!! Like I said he's got tons of potential but needs a little more supervision for now.

Now what if the soon to be former supervisor would've done that WAAY sooner?!! He never did as he tries to be non-confrontational and he himself will even shy away from doing a job as he say he's "not comfortable" doing it. WTF, you're the leader!! I don't care if you're uncomfortable, it's your frickin job!

Anyways, just a little update/rant, lol.

I sent him a text after shift, as I was in the office writing a pass down, and didn't get the chance to tell him good job before he left.

Kinda helped me know if I'm on the right track with what he said.
