Gas tank replacement ????

Ok, so I just went ahead and ordered a new gas tank, sending unit, and rebuilt carter carb for the 65 valiant 225 /6. I have a question about removing the tank. I looked last night and took the screws out of the filler tube at the fender and also in the gasket/cover in the trunk. Now, does the filler tube just pull out of and insert into the new tank? What's the best way to get the tube out...before or after the tank is removed? any input would be great. I plan on taking the tank out and getting the new lines ready for when the goodies get here. thnx
 
Other body styles may be different but most likely, you won't get it out with the tank in. You really don't even need to remove it. Just drop the tank down and the filler neck will slide right out.
 
thank you. it was like that with the other OT car i piddled with. I just loosened it up so that it had wiggle room and dropped the tank. I sure hope that all of this gets Rosey up and running so I can get the brakes right and then drive her in and out of the garage.
 
Save your old lock ring for the sending unit. The new ones are thinner/cheaper and do not seal.

Unscrew the nut on the J-bolt for the gas tank strap and undo the strap. then pull down and wiggle the tank until it comes off of the filler tube.


Remember to lube the rubber grommet for the filler tube when you install the new tank. Sometimes you have to wrestle them up the tube and the lube helps (grease, WD-40 etc).

And don't forget the ground strap for your sending unit. The metal clip that goes across the rubber hose and connects the metal fuel line on the car to the sending unit tube. Make sure the surfaces are nice and clean for a good ground.
 
Also smart to de-rust and paint the under-trunk area and everywhere else exposed while the tank is out. If you plan to re-do the rear brake lines and hoses, now is a good time.
 
1965 service manual states you can remove the filler neck without taking out the tank. Slide the tube into the tank, twist the tube 180 degrees so it is facing up and wrestle it up and out of the tank over the side of the fender.

It's insane how badly the new rings don't work. I bought a spectra tank w/ a spectra lock ring. It didn't seal at all.

Yeah, you would think that they would test their parts together to make sure that they worked.... :banghead:
 
A thinner lock ring coupled with a thinner gasket is the problem. I haven't had any issues but I saved the original lock ring just in case.

Anyone have pics of what the grounding should look like on the sending unit? My current sending unit does not have a ground anywhere. It only has the electrical connection for the gauge on the post. Since the new set up will be here soon, I thought I could get it in my mind what it should look like. thnx
 
sorry no pic. it is short piece of flat wire ( 1/4 inch wide), it clamps to the tube coming out of tank pickup and other clamps on metal fuel line there at tank. any mopar venfor sells the repops. the old fuel line needs the rust cleaned off for ground. hope that explains it. look it up on computer and you will see.
