PLEASE put the drums on far enough to engage the shoes, without engaging the studs and "wiggle them" I think you will find they are like throwing a "marble in a boxcar!!!"

THESE look like they have to be 10" brakes!!!!

The a body axles have a shorter distance from the wheel mounting face to the
housing flange face than the donor brake parts car had. These axle shafts weren't meant to hold 2 1/2" shoes. This is why the washers were required to make up this difference.
You could change to large bolt axles and the brakes would fit correct. But your wheels would need to be large bolt pattern also.
Is this a 8 3/4 or ?
If you are working on a 8 3/4 It would be a good time to change to big bolt pattern. Otherwise
You need to get those brakes off of there.
Yes, it's a 8.75/489 rear and I agree..... I do think that going with new axles would be a good way to go which is something I was seriously considering. It would solve this issue, other than needing new wheels, which I want to replace anyhow since I just have the small steel 14in rims.

I already told you what's wrong. Get some A body 10" drums and all will be well.

What you are dealing with right now is why I think the a bodies had such a small following and never grew to gain the affection and popularity of the b bodies or the other brands of muscle cars. Their brakes were barely adequate freaks at best that had no interchange with nothing else. Even the bolt pattern is its own. It wasn't till 73 that ma Mopar figured this out. Luckily it can be easily remedied today but wasn't common knowledge back in the day.
On the first swinger I owned (bought in 1979)I replaced every single brake part(10"drums front and back) for a complete rebuild at an attempt to make the car work well. 340 4-speed car. Complete waste of money. Big bolt disc brakes and axles for me ever since. It will convert your a body into a super car. If there is one single mod these cars need the most this is it. Hope this saves you money and time maybe your life.
Yes they are that bad. I know this post will likely ruffle some feathers but I feel it is very important to be able to stop. Even a slant can take you to hiway speeds.
This is my 2¢. Be careful.

It was mentioned above that the 10" drums are obsolete. I know this is just the back brakes and they do a small percentage of the braking but get that car so it is easily repaired with easy to get parts.

If you do infact have 10" shoes and 11" drums then your donor brakes won't work with the large bolt axles. All you have to do is get the axles, backing plates, drums and shoes to be compatible with each other. I can't believe someone would mess this up so bad.

If you could locate a 73-76 A body 8 1/4, take the complete rear brake assemblies, they will bolt onto the 8 3/4, and then buy aftermarket large bolt pattern A body axles and it will all go together properly.

With the drums a hitting the backing paltes where they are, the backing plates are obvoiusly 11" too. OP, have you take a shoe off and set it inside the drum to see if the shoe very closely fits the drums? Yous should do that ASAP before going any further with axles, etc.; please give u a pic of the shoe in the drum, set up against the friction surface. The park brake might possibly work with a mix of 10" shoes and 11" drums.
