Doesn't sound serious to me. Could be that the new brushes need time to seat. Doesn't sound like bearings, more like a "finger" hitting the rotating part, like the baseball cards we put on our bikes so the spokes flicked them and we had a tough ride. If too much to ship back, I would just use it and see if it goes away.
