Where Do I Ask 4.7 V8 Retrofit Q's?

Hey guys- I have the opportunity to get a 4.7L V8 with 9000kms (~5500 miles) on it, and am considering a retrofit into a car for my daughter, similar to my Gen 3 Hemi plan for my car. Any advice/bonuses/drawbacks I should be aware of? Does this share the LA bellhousing pattern? What about the crank? 6-bolt or 8?

I owned a 4.7 and they develolp problems betwen 100K and 125K miles. Until then it was a great engine. Change oil every 4-5K

I`ve got an 02 w/ 156,000 some odd on it, never had a problem w/ it at all. oil changed every 4000-4500 since new. very dependable, haven`t even changed the 02 sensor. just batteries-oil-filter-tires. amazing little engine, for the 5400 plus lbs truck it`s in. ------bob

If you change the O2 sensor you may find it runs twice as good as it does now.
 
There isn't any aftermarket support for this engine including MoPar Performance.
Everything to get it into the car and hook up is if your design and fabrication.
 
Well, I figure if I can build a custom MPI for a 408, Megasquirt a 5.7 Hemi, then the lack of support for a 4.7 shouldn't hurt my feelings!lol Just not sure I wanna place a 5.7 between the rails for her, so the smaller mill and for the $, I can't hardly complain!

I had thought about this a while back. I had a complete engine and 2 short blocks to play with, HO cams, and a steel crank. I was going to adapt a magnetic pickup distributor to the drivers side cam to run the ignition and an MS2 to run the EFI. At the end of 2006 I got my first Hemi and I sold all of my 4.7L stuff off. The weak link in that engine is it's powdered metal connecting rods. At one time aftermarket cams were available, ported heads, and supercharger kits. When the Hemi came out all of the 4.7l stuff died out. Good luck with your venture!! I would love to see it done!!
 
At the salvage we couldn't find enough good used 4.7L V8 engines to supply the demand there was. We salvaged a lot of nice vehicles that needed 4.7L engines. Based off my experience there I wouldn't want to be in that boat.
 
This is news to me. If not Dodge, then who?

I second that question...I'll be interested in the educated response that deems Chrysler's modular 4.7 and 3.7 "non mopars".

As for the original question. I think it would be a cool retrofit. Probably encounter everything you would with the 5.7 swap, but save the additional cost for the engine. If you know how to mega squirt then I say go for it. Good luck!
 
I always thought that would be an interesting business. Trouble is, I'd a drug home all the profits!!!

It is a fun business if you aren't one of the guys pulling parts. I was the car buyer so I really had fun spending money and got to see all the inventory before anyone else.

looks to be an 8 bolt crank. after 2008 they went standard forged rods. Camshafts are hollow oil transports with the lobed sintered welded on, aftermarket camshafts? I would say not cheap. Its a truck motor from the outset.

E-Booger was dead wrong about the future of this motor, he thought it was going to be the new modular V8 but the new Hemi (like always) kicked this bad boy to the back burner and ultimately off the stove.

That quote is merely stating those engines will replace the ancient AMC origins mills. The modular engines were not of amc design. For that to be true, the design would have to predate Chrysler's acquisition in 1987. fyi The engines didnt debut until 1999.
 
Design and production are 2 different groups, could be decades apart. The design was AMC, it was made, then refined by Chrysler. If a post said it wasnt a Mopar motor, this is probably what the basis was. Its a pretty radical departure from any V8 Mopar, could have been the AMC roots. Look at the oil pump, AMC all the way. Chryco made the AMC 360 until 91, that was designed in 70. Just sayin....I didnt make the claim, just did a little research.

at any rate, it`s pretty amazing to me. small engine-big truck,over 5400 lbs.,runs as good as anything comparable out there. did out run a 327 balzer going uphill on the hiway tho! made the chebby boys mad, they threw me tha finga!:finga:em !!
 
I believe the 2.7, the 3.7, and the 4.7 to be of Mercedes design, down fall on all those engines are the cost of replacement parts, look at timing chain set costs alone. . . .
 
I would go for it if you can get it cheap, my 4.7 has 210k with very little replaced. Actually the only new engine parts are water pump, t stat housing and exhaust gaskets and bolts
 
I'm looking at $700 for it...pretty reasonable, and the biggest motivation to have it...
