Each gear is 3/4" thick. Outer gear is fully engaged, inner gear is .425" (7/16") engaged.

425hp, 4.10 ratio, 3300lbs with Bear's Pro Axle.

Is 7/16" enough, this is with the retainer behind backing plate against housing end flange.

Putting it on the backing plate face will lose another .1025", brake offset seems ok.

I wouldn't trust it. A buddy of mine brought his sure grip over for me to take apart and rebuild because he installed axles that only engaged 3/8" into the inner spline. With his 350 hp 340 it stripped them off and he was running street tires. I always like to see full engagement.

Thanks fishy, my son called Bear's and he was told they like to see 1/2" minimum engagement of the inner spline so we're worried about 1/16" and that it is our call.

We were both on the fence about this and when I read your post to him he said "change it".
Not a big deal for me as the Mig is there and I have an arbour jig for shortening 8.75" housings, just another bump in the road.

He quotes his Grandfather "there's no good enough, there's right and wrong".

Big thanks again Dan and son Graham.

If you don't mind, he was (passed away couple of yrs ago) a Millwright, when people would call him a perfectionist it would drive him crazy, not as much as hearing someone say "ah, that's good enough".

That's when he would say there's only right or wrong, which way do you want to do it?

Your welcome Dan. Your lucky to have a shortening jig. I've rounded up almost everything for one. Good luck with the project

Well I took it out today and have cut, welded and reinstalled and have it on tires.

I measured so the axles touch the cross shaft with retainer against housing end flange, the thickness of the backing plate (.1045") will be the clearance between axle end and cross shaft.

Much happier now and if it breaks I get a housing for my car and will build a bigger one for my son.
