Cheeto,

The 1971 383/300 HP Engine with the Fresh-Air Package {Code #N-96} 'Shaker Hood'
was equipped with a 'special' Holley #6193 Carburetor for the 4-Speeds.

I think this one depends on the driver, too close.

Performance,

1968 Road Runner 383
* 4-Speed
* 3.91 Gears > {Special Performance Axle Package}
* F70 x 14" Goodyear Polyglas GT Tires

This would get you 'Dialed In' at ........... 14.50's @ 96 MPH

Remember, the early production Road Runners {pre January 15, 1968} had the horrible
freak linkage with the 'Inland Shifter'.

Note;
By swapping out the 'Inland Shifter' with the later 1968 Production 'Hurst Shifter' Mechanism, you could
knock off {-.015} off the Elapsed Time, and get down into the 14.35's.

Note;
Add Stock 'Cheater' Slicks {7.00" Wide x 27" Diameter} for Drag Race Testing, and the 'Road Runner 383'
should hit ......... 14.15's @ 98 MPH.

Cheeto,

1971 Plymouth 'Cuda 383
* N96 'Fresh Air Package 'Shaker Hood'
* 4-Speed
* 3.91 Gears

OK, with stock F70 x 14" Tires {6.55" wide x 26.45" Diameter}, and with the 'light'
rear end of the 'Cuda.

You were in the range of ....... 14.70's @ 95 MPH

#1 Option
Add the 'optional' E60 x 15" Tires {7.50" wide x 26.10" Diameter}

You were in the range of ...... 14.50's @ 96 MPH

#2 Option
Add the 'Cheater' Slicks {7.00" Wide x 27" Diameter}

You were in the range of ...... 14.25's @ 97 MPH

This shows the myth of E-bodies as being heavy....

been reading this just for intertainment. I gotta thro in here, I`ve been driving chrysler products all my life for the most part. I have never seen one that didn`t out weigh the advertised weight by hundreds ofr pounds all the b bodies I`ve owned were 3800 - 3900 lbs

Advertised Weight;

1968 Road Runner 383
* Shipping Weight ........ #3424 lbs.
* Curb Weight .............. #3538 lbs.

1971 'Cuda 383
* Shipping Weight ....... #3409 lbs.
* Curb Weight ............. #3555 lbs.

Close Cigar,

No matter how you 'slice it', this is a Toss Up Drag Race.

Providing, both cars can use 7" Wide 'Cheater Slicks'.

The 'Cuda 383 would benefit more with the use of the Cheater Slicks.

Also, compare the A-833 Transmissions.

Road Runner 383 ...... 2.66 / 1.91 / 1.39 / 1.00

'Cuda 383 ................. 2.47 / 1.77 / 1.34 / 1.00

Cheeto,

Suspension Tid-Bits,

The 1968 Road Runner 383 came thru with Heavy-Duty Suspension.
* Left Spring ....... 6 Leaf
* Right Spring ..... 5 1/2 Leaf

The 1971 'Cuda 383 came thru with Standard-Duty Suspension
* Left Spring ....... 4 1/2 Leaf
* Right Spring ..... 4 1/2 Leaf

'Cuda 383 ................. 2.47 / 1.77 / 1.34 / 1.00
That gear ratio spread on the 69 R.R.,is interesting....

Correct A-Body Bomber

A-833 Transmission Ratio's

* 3.09 / 1.92 / 1.40 / 1.00 ... > {6 Cylinder}
* 2.66 / 1.91 / 1.39 / 1.00 ... > {Pre-1971 'Fine Spline'}
* 2.65 / 1.93 / 1.39 / 1.00 ... > {1966 thru 1970 'Coarse Spline'}
* 2.44 / 1.77 / 1.34 / 1.00 ... > {1971 thru 1974 'Coarse Spline'}
* 2.47 / 1.77 / 1.34 / 1.00 ... > {T/A and AAR 'Fine Spline'}

O-M-R,

Close Race,

The Road Runner would definitely take the 'Cuda off the line.

But the 'closer ratio' A-833 in the 71 'Cuda would give the 'Fish' a slight advantage
thru 2nd-Gear {at early mid-Track} as both cars are near even.

Then it would get interesting,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

This shows the myth of E-bodies as being heavy....

However, what it does show is that they are just as heavy as a B Body.

For the same weight, I'll take the car with the useable back seat and trunk, especially since it handles the same.

Also (and possibly for the win), I'll take a 340 "29" body A body with less weight, more room for wider rear tires, and still have a useable trunk and back seat.

Some Factors,

1968 Road Runner 'Coupe' {383}

* The lightest of all Road Runners at #3424 lbs. {Shipping Weight}
* And that is with the Heavy-Duty 'GTX' Suspension

* .092" Torsion Bars {118 lbs./Inch = Load-Rate}
* Heavy-Duty Ball Joints
* .094 {Front Anti-Roll Bar}
* 6-Leaf Rear Springs {#150 lbs./Inch @ Wheel}
* Firm-Ride Shocks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

1971 'Cuda 383

Listed at #3409 lbs. {Shipping Weight} for 1971.

* .090" Torsion Bars {111 lbs./Inch = Load-Rate}
* Standard-Duty Ball Joints
* .088 {Front Anti-Roll Bar}
* 4 1/2 Leaf Rear Springs {#132 lbs. /Inch @ Wheel}
* 1" Piston {Standard-Duty Shocks}

Deceiving, is that the 1971 'Cuda {E-Body} is nose-heavy, and has a light rear-end.

But, the 'Cuda is more aero-dynamic at higher speeds.

Friend had a 68 RR all stock with a 323 open end rear and 4 speed. Other friend had a 71 Cuda 383 Auto with 355 Sure Grip but no N96. RR never lost in at least a dozen match races. Margin of victory was usually around 1/2 to 3/4 of a car length. Top end of 3rd gear and 4th is where the race was determined when the extra 35 horse took over.

Could the 1971 383/300 HP Engine {w/Code 'N96' Fresh Air System} run ?

Yes,

See Dave Boertman in 1971.

He ran a 1971 Charger 383/300 HP {w/Code N96 'Fresh Air System'} that was classed in NHRA 'J/SA'.

The Charger {#3527 lbs. = Shipping Weight} was running 12.75's in March 1971 at
the NHRA Gatornationals, and won 'Stock Eliminator'.
