not had any bites yet on my request for an original vinyl trunk mat for a 68 barracuda fastback. i know one of you guys have a decent one of these that you've been thinking about replacing with a new "repo" job. so here's my offer - if you'll part with your old OEM mat, i'll pay you twice the price that a new repo one costs. you send me pics of your old mat and the price of the new one you want and i'll send you a check. now that's a fair deal isn't it?

along with that "old mopar smell" i want my 68 barracuda to stay "true" to its birth..:0).

i have worked VERY hard rebuilding, sanding, wire-brushing and "saving" EVERY original part on my car. AND .... i painted it in ACRYLIC LAQUER!! when was the last time you saw a resto done with that kind of paint? yes.. i know ... ALL original 68 barracudas were painted with ACRYLIC ENAMEL ... however, both those paints look very much the same and laquer is easier to work with than enamel (since i painted the car in my house garage not having a "paint booth." and i might ad, there is only ONE place in the entire United States where you can still get acrylic laquer auto paint - a specialty resto shop in san diego, california.)

the ONLY non-OEM and/or resto parts on my barracuda are: the radio antenna, an up-graded electonic ignition module, the little plastic x-shape retainers that hold the door rubber seal around the doors; a "new" rubber seal around the trunk lid opening; 4 cragar mags and 4 BFGoodrich radials. That's it!!!

so i just HAVE to find an old beat up, torn or stained OEM trunk mat. yea, i know... pretty stupid... but hey ... we all have our hang-ups and problems.

It is also true that the replacement mats they sell do not look like the originals that came with fastbacks in the least. I know for sure that 1967 fastbacks did not come with "plaid" patterned trunk mats -- they were black and had a rough-textured surface, like burlap. I still have mine -- it's pretty tattered and held together with duct tape on the back. I have never seen a mat like this for sale.

mvh....
you are so right about repo parts vers OEM. i recently ran into an electrical problem on my 68 (due to the prior "ya-hoo" owner having a "Viper" "anti-theft" system put in the car. here's some advice - DON'T EVER PUT AN ELECTRIC ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM IN AN OLD MOPAR!!!).

in the course of running down my short, i fried the turn signal switch in the steering column. it was a very dumb and senseless mistake. i happen to have another 68 fastback cuda for parts and lifted another unit out of that car. however, when i put that "new" (old OEM) switch in, i installed an "in-line" fuse on each of the six wires. it is a bit of a wiring mess but i securred the assembly with zip-ties and tape and hid it under the dash. in my mind, this hassel and mess was well worth NOT frying another 47 year old OEM mopar turn signal switch.

but to my point of repo parts. i bought a "new" turn signal switch off of ebay and comparred it to the original OEM mopar part. there is NO comparison!! the new switch is very cheap and thin plastic comparred to the old switch. and the old switch has a very cool solid copper peg that goes against the steering wheel copper contact plate. this "peg" has a solid copper "roller-wheel" that "rolls" on the copper contact plate. the "new" repo part just has a copper peg that goes against the contact plate of the steering wheel. it is easy to see how the roller-wheel design would last much longer and work better than just holding the copper peg against a contact plate that just rubs against it. i've seen plenty of examples of how new repo parts are of inferior quality and design as compared to 50 year old OEM parts.

so i'm a "purist" when it comes to parts. i will ALWAYS use an "old" or "NOS" "OEM" part over a "new" repo part if i can.

can't believe there's no one out there that's not interested in getting a lot of money for their OEM trunk mat. come on... give me a price ... i'll either engage in some negotiation or i'll start laughing hysterically...

there is simply NONE to be had.. all have been replaced and tossed out...

my next step is to start contacting some of the "classic car" junk yards that i see advertising in hemmings and other places. i've been watching old barracudas being sold on ebay for years now and i suspect that some of these cars that are pictured in junk yards and fields may have old trunk mats in them. i'm going to up the anty here. i will pay $300.00 to the first person who contacts me with an old "correct" 68 barracuda fastback trunk mat. now here's the conditions for the $300.00 mat: the trunk mat has to be 100% complete - no torn "half mats" or "almost complete" mats; no giant holes in the mat larger than about the size of a quarter; grease or rust stains are ok; tears or cuts in the mat are ok so long as the tear or cut goes together when the mat lays flat allowing the mat to look all there. i know there is a FABO person out there that are willing to part with their OEM trunk mat so they can take my money and buy some other part for their car. should i get more than one mat offered, i get to decide which mat i want, but i will post pics of the mats here on FABO. this offer is open for 30 days from the date of this post.
hope my mat is out there somewhere in FABO land....

Not an expert on original mats but I would guess your offer of twice the cost
Of a repop is not even in the ball park, not even close to the ball park. This is the one thing most guys want for their car a nice original or a accurate repop.

yup... for your old mopar trunk mate ...

$300.00 ...
American dollars or
duggets or
euros or
british pounds or
canadian dollars or
mexican pesos or
57 Big Macs or
50 six packs of Budweiser or
133 2x4x8's at Home Depot or
whatever else you want that is very close to $300.00 dollars (US).

maybe i should contact mark forman on "Graveyard Carz?"

the offer for the OEM 68 barracuda fastback trunk mat has now gone up to $350.00. all other details previously posted as to condition still apply.

yes you're right ... this is a nutty post.

What's the difference in a fastback mat and a notch mat?

geo...

i'm not "desperate" for a trunk mat - there may have been things or people (probably the various blonds that i dated in high school around 1:00 a.m. in the morning) that i have been desperate for at times ... but i would not say "a trunk mat" falls into that category. i would just like to find an original OEM trunk mat because my car is almost all original. for the privilege of throwing a 47 year old ratty piece of vinyl/rubber on the floor of the trunk in my 68 s, .... i am willing to pay a "reasonable" amount of money.

68coupe...

i think the trunk in a fastback is much smaller than the trunk of a coupe. maybe some of the FABO folks can comment on the difference. if a coupe mat will work, i'll be happy to buy one of those...

j

No, the coupe/convertible mat is completely different. The trunk floor on the fastback is half as big, as anyone who has ever owned a fastback can tell you. And coupes/'verts came with the plaid mat -- fastbacks had a black textured mat, that has never been reproduced. That's the whole point of this thread, I thought...

I mean, you could certainly cut down a coupe mat to fit. But then you might as well buy a new incorrect fastback mat -- either way you'd have the incorrect plaid pattern.

mvh...

see, now you're post is exactly why i love using FABO as a resource...

i have two fastbacks - a 68 and a 69 but i have never owned a coupe or a convert. the fastback trunk is very small - i knew that part. however, i did not know what the original material and pattern was for a fastback mat. and if the fastback mat has never been reproduced, then that explains why i'm having such a hard time finding one.

you guys out there in "sunshine land" have all the great old cars and parts. i just can't believe that one of those "classic car" junk yards all over CA and AZ do not have an old mat in one of those stacks of plymouths.

if you get any more info about this unique and coveted mat, drop me a line.

thanks for the additional information.

I decided to post a few pics of the correct trunk mat in my 68 Barracuda Fastback in case anyone watching this post needs/wants a reference.

And before anyone asks, it is not for sale for any price. Irreplaceable original, part number 2877157.

68original...

thanks for the pics and part number reference for the trunk mat. i can appreciate your wanting to keep your car 100% original. my car is getting very close to that point now and that's why i'm making such a big deal over finding one of these mats. i did find an original "cardboard" spare tire cover that is in excellent condition. now all i need is an original mat to go over top of it.

take care of your "original" fish.
jim c

ps. i would love to see some more pics of your car (interior, engine bay, trunk, etc.) and a pic of the odometer showing "8 miles." i would like to use your car as a reference point for finishing up a few items on my car.
