Trunk mounted battery , sheet metal back seat firewall regulations. The "search" function turned up,.024 sheet metal & .032" aluminum sheet. The post was five years old. Has anyone got current regs? Much appreciated.
 
You're very welcome. "IF" LOL I live long enough to get my car back, I've pretty much decided to trunk mount the battery.......a big change of direction for me, LOL

Understand completely. I am slow & cheap,lol. Paint & body takes forever. At least the trunk mount battery, will be a no-brainer for you.
 
Putting the battery in the trunk is one of my side projects while I wait on the machine work to be done to my engine. What do you guys think of this kit from Summit. Not going in a race car, just a Saturday night bruiser.

Going with a sealed box is way easier IMO then building a rear firewall. When you do a firewall, it also needs to go under the package tray too, which can be a pain in the butt. I prefer the aluminum Taylor box.
 
Just make sure the box is "NHRA" approved. I'm certain the one BrianT pictured IS approved


I have yet to figure out how you find that out, an example...............

I don't figure I'll be going to the track for awhile, if ever, and I found a battery / box kit on CL for 60 bucks. According to the Noco site, "it might be" approved, but I doubt it. I can't find an "approved list" if it exists......................

but what I bought seems to be the same kit, and it IS NOT sealed. I don't see how it could possibly meet regs (Mine was actually the Summit kit, made by Noco)

On the other hand I've finally decided to by an Optima style battery (might go Trojan, no comments!!! pleauz) and so this one should be OK?

Well the one I bought is over a hundred new with only 2 gauge cable. So I'd guess that is not completely out of line. The box is what is the rip off. It doesn't cost anymore to injection mold a better box, LOL

Smog laws,NHRA laws,have no shame. I find it amazing, a stock factory lap belt is safe,(to a certain extent),yet a 4 or 5 point harness,needs a recert every few years. That's mental ( a strong 4-5 point harness over a few years ,is illegal. Yet a 40+ year old lap belt is legal. Amazingly wrong in common sense.)Damn...
 
I did a battery relocation kit in my 66, mainly because my fenderwell is....in need of attention, and it may go bye-bye, havent decided yet. anyway, maybe someone can pick up some ideas. made the switch bracket from a carter fuel pump bracket, hold down, cables, and rod assembly myself. I sealed the original vents in the caps, drilled two 1/4 inch holes, one in each cap, epoxy'd a 90 and a tee, connected them with vinyl hose, and routed a vent out on a soft plug in the trunk floor. braided cable to frame in the back, 2 gauge braided cable from front sub-frame to block, and 4 gauge braided cable from head to firewall. used 1/0 nickel plated copper core stereo cable for the positive side. works like a charm. cheers!
