How to get the nuts/screws? out

I don't have the equipment at this time to take and post a picture. I figure if anyone knows what I'm talking about, they will be able to help me anyway. I need to take the gas filler tube out of my 68 Barracuda. But, unlike my other Mopars, this one does not have Phillips head screws. Instead, it has three screws with a sort of round cone shaped head, flat on top and, instead of a standard slot or Phillips slots there are 3 indentations at the edge of the nut. This is a California car and I suspect this is related to their pollution and no tampering laws (I lived there 10 years). I have tried vice grips, needle nose pliers, standard pliers, you name it but no luck. It appears these heads were designed for some type of device to fit over the nut, have nubs to fit in the indentations, and then turn them out. Pain in the you know what. I have fussed with this for many weeks. Getting the tank out was easier than these screws. Anyone know what they are and how to get them out?

Those are an optional screw that was sometimes used for anti-theft purposes. Snap-On is supposed to sell the proper tool for removal @ around $20. Because they were optional you can replace them with a #10 X 3/4" phillips head that was the other style used.

Backing them out a few turns from the inside always works for me.
 
There is a special screwdriver for those. The professional tool guys used to sell it. but I don't know what it was or the part number. I'm not sure if it is still available. Maybe toolmanmike can add to this....
 
KK, I haven't seen that tool for years. It is a Eaton three wing tamper proof. I will look. tmm
 
Aparently there were 2 sizes. They were tool number SC129 and SC130 but they have been discontinued and are no longer available. May be the competition has them. Sorry guys. tmm

My brother used to have a screwdriver handle with a shaft with three "prongs" on the end of it...

Are those available that are in your picture?

That is a Mac socket you see in the photo but they are not available. I have used a Dremel to slot broken screws and it works good.
 
As I stated before, carefully center-drill the head, then use a few progressive sized drills into the head, until it breaks off. Then you can remove the pipe and takethe rest of the screw out with pliers or vise grips.
 
I just used a 1/4" drive socket close to the size. used a cut off wheel to make it look
like the screwdriver in the pic above. works great
 
Those are factory anti-theft screws so Juvenile Delinquents don't steal your flip-open gas cap. I know some guys back them out from inside the trunk using Vise-grips on the threaded shanks but......

I bought a socket to fit them from McMaster-Carr about 8 years ago. IIRC, there were 2 sizes listed and I measured the head diameter of the screw and matched it up.
 
Hey thanks for the great help. And, Cuda '67 for posting the picture. I am tyring to get the hang of modern tech but it has bee slow going. Family and friends say I can short out anything if I am in the same room and used to ban me from touching anything ha ha.
Anyway, great picture. I hope to give this a try this week,going through the trunk to turn them from the inside with vice grips. That interesting tool will be my last resort as this is the only care I have with this type of screw. My 68 Charger has Phillps screws. Again, I can't thank all of you enough for the help you have provided. I am within a month of painting the underside. Can you believe, with the car stitting on jack stands (no motor or tranny), and NEVER having done this before, I droped the front suspension, torsion bars, K frame and all, leaf springs and rear end in the back, so that nothing is in the engine bay or under the car and, and, I have sanded down the entire engine bay (hand sanding and some hand tools), and the entire underside? Yep. I took off the front fenders and have sanded that area as well...oh, I forgot to add, I used a heat gun and removed pounds of undercoating (that was fun) front to back. I learned how to do all of this FROM THIS FORUM, fom all of you. Thanks a million
