unless the guy at the parts counter has a lot of grey hair, i am sceptical about parts recommended to me by "some young guy" at my local auto parts store. sorry, but the guy i'm asking questions about mechanical parts for my 68 barracuda from should also be able to tell me which episode of the Smothers Brothers' "Laugh-In" he liked best.

with that said, i'm sure there are a bunch of FABO "gear-heads" that can answer my question: what is a good "present-day" gear oil that can be used in my 68 833 4-speed trans? also, i need a suggestion on a good diff lub (with mopar required additive) for the 3:91 positraction "punkin" gear set in my cuda.

as always, thanks for all the great info that the FABO community always provides.

i was kinda sorta down that road earlier and i am a younging that has no clue about teh smother brothers but lots of research from this board and many other mopar boards.

I went to the local mopar dealer for the friction additive for the rear end and dumped that in and then added gear oil for the rear which i believe was 75w90
i also used the 75w90 for the a833, but i have only drove the car for a total of 2 miles

i'm going to check on the pensoil product at napa tomorrow. oh.. .and dodgedifferent2... the smothers brothers were two brothers who had a tv show in the late 60's who got into trouble with the network they were on because of the edgy political comedy they were doing. their show also pressed the limits on "sex on tv" which was very taboo at the time. that was in the day when all "radio signals" came "through the air" to "antennas on house roofs." yes, we all survived without cable and the internet. "social networks" back then were the people you hung out with during free time in high school and the only people who regularly carried around "electronic devices" were at NASA.

good to see you on FABO..

Jim: Remember Pat Paulsen? Ran for President --- like two or three times? I loved that guy! Got his autograph on a bottle of his wine. He had a winery in Sonoma in his later years.
I'm with you ... its too bad nowadays, you gotta research this stuff yourself, because its "foreign" to the young guys behind the counter anymore.

trans get GL-4 oil only, Not GL-5 for rear end. syncromesh i hear is good, i use Jamie Passons fluid, red line MTL is good. for the rear end Doc Diff said 85/140 with the additive.

hey there:

clifft - i got one of pat paulsen's "dollar bills" with his face instead of washington's - without getting too political here, if paulsen was running today i might consider voting for him over some or our other choices recently.. as to "old car parts and stuff" ... i generally go to a local NAPA store that has never been remoulded and has a "parts counter" that looks like someone rebuilt a cummings on it. the guys there look like the only way they will ever leave that job is on a strecher...

mr. demon 340 ....
could you give me a little more information on the products you're suggesting ... like who makes these products - GL-4? jamie parsons fluid? "red line MTL?"
i think pensoil or quaker state sells 85/140 gear oil here in pittsburgh but i'm not sure of the additive - will mopar "sure-track" additive work in old posi-trac diffs?

thanks for all your info..

el5demon...

i sent an email to the 2 companies you listed for trans oil for my 833 4speed and diff grease for my 8.75 dana posi. i'll let you know what they say.

Redline MTL (manual Trand Lube) for the 833.
For the Diff, Redline has several gear lubes, most already have the limited slip additive in the lube. The 75w-140 Light Weight Shock Proof has been working good in my 8-3/4" diff. in my 11 second #4,100 lb Charger.
I use the regular redline gear oils in my other cars and trucks.

Use any good 80 90 wt gear lube in either the trans or rear. You don't need anything new or fancy. Use the Mopar additive for the sure grip. Check out Brewers Performance and Passon Performance. I remember watching the Smothers Brothers show.
