The passenger side mirror on my 68 Barracuda is useless, it serves no purpose unless I was operating the car from the rear seat. We're all aware of this problem, my question: did this problem exist right from day one when these cars rolled off the assembly line or brand new at the dealership? What is the correct solution to fix this problem?

Yes it came from the factory with this problem. Only way to fix it is use a bigger mirror. You can try one of those stick one mirrors from and auto parts store.

I wasn't aware that this was a factory problem? I put on a mirror myself and I used the measurements from the driver's side and transferred them to the passenger door. It's useless. I just assumed that I did it wrong and had planned on changing it when I paint the car. I don't feel so bad now that I know that they were worthless from the factory!

Agreed. They don't work well at all but damn, they look good! lol

We need to try one of those "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" mirrors.

What is the "fix" for this? Move mirror forward/backwards... or angle it?
Have a passenger side mirror that I plan on putting on this Fall.

I measured the drivers side before drilling holes. The mirror was in the middle of the rear vent frame. When I moved it rearward, the mirror wouldn't pivot far enough inward to view properly. I split the difference and it works ok but not perfect. I haven't tried it but the parabolic "spot" mirror may help. tmm

The passenger side mirror is basically only to see if there is anything in what would normally be in your blind spot on that side, and of course they don't do much for vision otherwise.
They are supposed to see that blind spot from the drivers seat, but turning your head and taking a glance at that spot is a much better solution.
That's one of the reasons a passenger side mirror isn't required by law (cause they don't do much for safety)

Was gonna move my driver side back as it is in center of vent window and the mirror has scratches from where the edge of the vent window hits the mirror when pushed fully open.
Looks like the vent window will come in contact as you have it located?

for last several decades the E body guys would poop in their pants to have an original dual mirror car!!?? LOL MUST be why we drive A bodies!!??????? LOL

Yes it does. Definitely a trade off. I don't usually open the vents more than about a inch or two.

There is/was one picture from a magazine on the web of a 67 notch that shows a right mirror mounted ( I assume it was factory ). The left mirror on 67 are positioned different from 68 and later if that makes a difference. Anyway...That camera view shows It wasn't positioned the same as left mirror. Only about a 1/4 inch of painted door showing between mirror foot and the belt molding. I've heard that positioning the mirror so the views are usable will cause the vent window to hit the mirror when opened.
My right mirror is positioned same as the left and I do have usable views for changing lanes and such. This right mirror is highly ( and expensively ) modified inside and out though.

Today some poop in there pants for no reason. LOL
I'll be here all week :)

I just put one on my Dart after 20 years of wanting one.

I was warned that the mirror doesn't work, but without it I found that the car looked like it was missing something, like a head with only one ear!

Dad and I found the view sucked out of the factory pass side mirror on his 67 cuda. Dad stuck one of them convex mirrors on it...didnt help much and looks like crap! LOL Kinda like the backup lights....Im thinking LEDs for the b/u lights might help??

Well, I was going to put a set of rallye style mirrors on my Duster since it only came with the low trim round driver side one. Do the rallye style have more mirror area and are they better?

Shouldn't a Duster have painted or chrome sport mirrors ?

We have become accustomed to bigger and bigger. Horsepower, body size, pickups etc. The mirrors on my wifes 2012 Impreza are gigantic compared to the 68 Dart. But then with excellent visibility all around and no headrests its not that big a deal.

Define useless please. I was going to put them on my cars only because I usually stuff them in tight spots for winter. Is it that the vent window frame blocks the view?

Define useless please.

use·less
ˈyo͞osləs/

adjective

not fulfilling or not expected to achieve the intended purpose or desired outcome.
"a piece of useless knowledge"

Seriously. It is for looks only, it balances out the car. It is absolutely no use in backing or changing lanes. I use my other two mirrors and look over my right shoulder when I want to see behind.

You forgot to include the picture of my ex-wife for the "useless" definition.... LOL! :D

I have also had some mirrors where the vent window hit the mirror when I tried to open it... :banghead:

The cars have two other mirrors whats the problem? j/k

I've help guide owners parking their cars at a few car shows. I have found that about 95% of guys backing up don't use any of their mirrors and can't back up straight. I think the two are related.

agreed. my vent opens fine but the only one who can see anything in the passenger mirror is ... yep, the passenger. '69 dart

I like the look of the rallye mirrors better, but see below....

Sport/Rallye mirrors were an option. Standard mirror looked like this and actually had a larger viewing area..
