First off this 727 has had many 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile runs and was build in 1990!

It is in a 1970 Duster with a mild 360 in it. Car has been off the street in storage since 1997. I have had it out many times since 1997 and even ran some 1/8 mile good times in it in 2012.

This week I am moving it to Virginia and after getting it running again after sitting a good year I had a problem getting it in reverse. I then drove it around the storage facility for 1 min. Then my D 2 1 did not work. I was able to get it back in R but it was bucking in and out of R. It is working fine in R now. It will barely roll in D and seems to roll better in 2 but it is like it has a 6000 RPM Stall in it. It will peg 5000! It is like the Converter is gone in it. I changed the filter and fluid and still the same thing.

Any ideas?

interesting. I think I might go 904 this time. Performance Automatic is close to me and they have a lifetime 904 under $3000.

Cable type ratchet shifter? Try adjustment/replacement of the shifter cable, they can stretch with time. Try the cheap stuff first. A line pressure test, with the car running(jackstands ,of course!), work the car through each gear, look for a drop in pressure. Try, the cheap stuff first.

Yeah sure. I'd try the cheap stuff first. Oil level, linkage / cable adjustment then a pressure test. If you have reverse but no 1-2-3 it could be the rear clutch is toast or the hydraulic circuit for the rear clutch. Either way it sounds like the trans is very tired & in need of a rebuild.

3000 bucks for a 904??? Wow!! Who rebuilt it Louis Vuitton???

Rear clutch circuit fault (frictions burned up and/or seal blown) is my guess. Sounds like time for a rebuild. Since it's a mild 360 a swap to a 904 would be a good swap but $3000 for a 904????? JEEZ LOUISE! That's freaking outrageous even if it does have a lifetime warranty. Only way I could see it costing that much is if they supplied the 904 built with the best parts available including a high quality billet converter snout and did the entire swap/conversion.

I am just going to pull the 727 and see what I find. I did check the shifter cable and it was fine.

I have always wanted to try a 904 in this car. If I can find a decent place to build me one close to Washington DC I would be happy. I have 2 904s I am moving up here with the can and when I have time I will find out what year they are etc. Performance Automatic up in Frederick MD sells a complete 904 for around $2700.

Thanks for the reply's

you can rebuild one yourself for a few hundred bucks....plus buy any special tools needed which is few if any and still have a couple grand left in your pocket...

Which basically tells me you don't charge enough. :D

LOL... I don't. Most of the time it's for a buddy that's short on cash (who isn't nowadays)

I have mixed emotions about that statement, because everyone say's that **** to me when they need work done.
That and "My (insert whatever relative) is a computer whiz and could easily do this, but he's not available."
That **** pisses me off, because it's like they are trying to make it sound like anyone could do what I do, except they are not around so they have to pay me to do it.

I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying stuff like "OH BULLSHIT, if your (whatever) could do this you would have them here doing it, so don't tell me anyone could do what I do." and "Now go get your check book out ya friggin whiner"

I'm tired of having a hard time with bills while some ******** cries and whines about what they have to pay, and can't I do this or that for less.
Makes me want to charge them more.:violent1:

See what you started? :)

Sorry for the hijack Coair.

What I started! :prayer: I hear ya on some buddies. Some just get to be buddies to use ya. I put a halt to that a long time ago. If they do me dirty they don't get any more help in the future. When I was young I let too many guys get over on me and got to the place you are. Doesn't happen any more. I have several buddies that don't always have a lot of money but they do things to help me in return. That's what I was referring to earlier.

I have rebuilt a 904 when I was 20 years younger. The reverse band snapped on it after about 3 months. I had the patience to do it then but any more. I am still surprised the 727 I had built lasted this long with all the passes on it. Soon I plan to hunt down a decent 727 904 builder here in the DC metro.

Don't settle for decent.......youll be sorry

Well 2 years later and I still have not pulled the Transmission! I have the car in my shop and have lifts so there it no excuse except time and cash! Weather is getting better and I have been moving it in and out. Is it possible the Torque Converter is the issue? I have to do some research on how to do a line pressure test and get the equipment needed for the test.

Doubt it.

Even if it was all the work to remove the current one and replace it would not be worth it I have decided. I am just going to go all out and get a Cope Race 904 or 727 manual shift. 904 I would have to get another drive shaft. At some point I either want a stroked 360 or 340 in the car and starting with the trans is not a bad idea.

If it were the converter you'd have no reverse either. The converter spins in only 1 direction so if it pulls in reverse it should pull in drive. The problem is in the trans. More than likely as soon as you drop the pan you'll find a bunch of clutch and band material (mud) in it which will be a sign that it's toast.

Build you a 904. A chimp could be trained to do it.

Anybody that would pay 3K for a 904 rebuild, "lifetime warranty" or not is a moron, borderline downs syndrome. Sorry, somebody had to say it.

How many loopholes do you think companies like that have to get out of warranties?

Do yourself a favor. Get the 904 and 727 ATSG service book off Ebay. Bout 25 or so bucks. That's about the best manual you can get. Then decide if you want a shift kit or not, what kind and follow the instructions closely. I have a friend who runs a shop for a living. He can literally rebuild a 904 on the bench in about 45 minutes flat. That's runnin the guts through the cleaner and all. If it was clean already he could do it in 20.

By doing it yourself, you actually do something valuable for yourself. You learn. No warranty on earth is worth as much.
