Yea, I just used the black seal putty per the instruction sheet. A good picture of it is shown in clifcuda65's post (he also had a cool similar way to yours with the tapered idea):
Okay, so no additional gasket sealer then? The Schumacher instructions say to use gasket cement on the base gasket "to hold in place", but that's on the underside - they don't mention anything on the top of the base gasket other than the strip caulk.
