my driveshaft should be back tomorrow. as I posted in previous posts about the pitch on the driveline, you guys said you would help me on this as I don't know much nor understand about pitch. I had the problem with the tranny mount being in wrong, the driveshaft was too short because the shop told me to measure from back of seal to yoke on rearend. what the problem was there was I measured from the back of the big rubber seal. now that the tranny was rebuilt and they put in the other kind of seal, I was about 1 1/2 " too short. anyway, I bought this guage and I want to make sure where to put it to measure the correct angle. last time I put it under the tail shaft on the tranny and under the nose on the rearend. what I would like to do here is have someone tell me if that is the correct place to set the guage and let me give you the numbers and then tell me how much I need to shim the rearend, front or back to get it at the right angle. I have 3 sets of shims I bought last time I played with this but apparently I didn't get it right. here is the guage. can someone post a pic as to where exactly to place it to get the right measurement. Thanks

What you measured from was the dust boot, not the seal.

ok anyway, put that on the tailshaft and then the pin head

1 1/2" short? That's quite a bit I think. I would put the shaft in and take it for a spin to see if that made any difference. At least that way you would have a good baseline to start with.

I think I will Bruce. just hate to keep jacking it up and down on the jack stands. getting too old for that. Thought I would check it before I let it down. if the guage is attached under the tailshaft on the tranny, does it need to go under the nose on the rearend or can it be opposite. I don't have a pinion snubber on it. If it goes on the flat part where the snubber goes, does it have to be on top of the tailshaft. want to get this right.

Terry, that looks like a great article but it is greek to this old man. I tried to read and understand one of those articles the last time I played with this and was really confused. so like I said earlier. I was thinking that if I could make sure I had the guage in the right place, I could read the guage and have someone tell me whether I need to shim the rearend nose up or nose down and how much to get the right angle. I get confused with the technical terms in the articles. in the pic of the article you talk about it showed the guage on the driveshaft, not the tailshaft. I think someone before told me that I could put the guage on the driveshaft right behind the u joint and in front of the u joint on the rearend. don't know if that is right or not.

If I need to put the guage under the tranny and on the rearend, why do I even need the driveshaft in to check pinion angle. sliding the driveshaft in the tranny and bolting it up to the rearend will not change angle will it.

You don't.

Nope.

The pinion angle will change under acceleration and deceleration.

ok, well I am going to pick up 2 of those gauges today while I am out and put one on the front and one on the back and see where I am at. will post what the numbers show and maybe someone will chime in here and tell me what I need to do to get this right. I am tired of this little rumble. thanks

not really under load. vibration comes after I accelerate and get to about 50-55 and then let out of it and cruise. when no acceleration. I have a slight movement in the driveshaft when I lift up on the front u-joint. it seems to be in the tailshaft. don't know exactly how much should be there but I am taking the car into the tranny shop Tuesday and let them look at it and ride with me. It is still under warranty. we will see what comes of that.
