70 Duster in Ventura CA

Looks like a solid project. We're those ski racks bolted to the roof? Looks like maybe he removed them.

that is not a real 340 car with no rally dash. Its a duster that someone may have put a 340 in.

I noticed that too...but that's not a bad thing that is has a 340!:burnout:

roof racks to carry stuff - just clamps on to drip rail. easy on and off
And thats good that they clip on, that would suck if someone had drilled holes into the roof lol

its cobbled up with a lot of different parts. I guess survivor these days means wrong dash with a 75/6 cluster....a steering wheel that was not available in these cars. Changed out front seat. Supposed to be a 70 but has a 71+ side stripe. Don't you just love how the wiper motor was just spray bombed with the rest of the engine compartment. That engine looks like a late 60s 318. Definitely not the right color to be a "survivor" 70 340 and something is going on with the alternator.

all of these are really ok for a project ...cant expect much from a 45 year old car ....but to claim survivor status .......I think not.

some sellers either don't know what they have or they think the mopar crowd was born yesterday.

I think you are right, allot of people just don't really know what they have, and just assume by looking at some pics on the internet, that the car they are trying to flip looks like that Demon 340 car they saw on the internet, so this must be the same thing. I bet upon inspection, you will find on the casting on the block to say -318, the motors look the same, that's the only way to tell that I know of, to a more trained eye, like some of you guys here, know other details to look for. None the less, this could be a fun car to fix up and make a driver out of.
I try to give some sellers the benefit of the doubt, that they just really, don't know what they are selling.

Did anyone notice that this may very well be a Mexican built Duster? Check out those hood scoop emblems, hard to make out but I think those are those Mexican "318" ones....also, a 4-speed was common in these cars.....notice the hood scoop has the hood tach bolted to the scoop? That's original for these Mexican built cars with both of these options. They never had a 340 though but engines come and go over the years....this actually might be a pretty rare car.

Surf racks man....Ventura! Where is our Mexican liason in here, I bet he would know.

Even though it may be cobbled together and not a factory 340 car (or Mexican!) I would still say it is a reasonable asking price - look at what you are getting - a highly desirable year and body style that does not look to be cancer stricken. Other than the one bent corner it looks reasonably straight, and it is a four gear! If it were closer to home and I had some spare cash I would be interested. Asking $6500, on the high side, but not stupid expensive like some of the cars I have seen lately.

It kind of does resemble something like a Mexican built car. What do the emblems say on the interior of the doors? I can't make it out. Also, look where the fuel line goes to the carburetor. What four barrel carburetor has a fuel inlet on the driver side?

You look at the pic of the passenger side it looks like there's a bash in the quarter panel. I know the pic of the back doesn't show this but, it's a great optical illusion if it's not. I smell something fishy.

There's a broken lug on the left wheel. If you look closely you will see the metal strip just below the grill is bent. Looks like major body work has been done before the re paint. Probably tons of bondo. I wouldn't give more than 2000.00 for this car and I'm being generous.

Totally. When I saw the inner door panel emblem with the hood emblem I thought Mexican Super Bee.

There's a guy in Ventura that has a Mexican Dart GTS and a Valiant Super Bee. I've posted pictures here of them before. Looking at the backgrounds it could be one of his.

And those Mexican cars get very hammered down there. Which is indicative in the pictures. In Mexico, THAT IS A SURVIVOR.

Now that I see the pictures. It surely 100% from Mexico. The clues...

  • No heater motor
  • Non US wiper motor. Totally different than anything here.
  • Inner doors cut for emblems on a 70 up duster non-vent door (never in US)
  • Hood Tach
  • Scoop emblems
  • 70 wide horn button wood wheel. Horn button is 70 B-body only, not common to swap on. If you enlarge picture, the button doesn't look exactly like US button.
  • When you enlarge picture there are no controls in the dash heater panel. It's blanked out.

So what is up with the drivers side exhaust manifold? It looks more like a drop down truck manifold, not the typical pass car upswept manifd that we are used to seeing. Did Mexican cars use a different steering box and have more clearance or something?

The speedometer is actually in KM/H not MP/H as well.
