Need some valvetrain geometry help!!

There has got to be a concept I am missing. With any higher lift cam and all other things held equal like base circle and pushrod length, how do you shift the contact patch further out. I know I am missing something because all I can imagine is that the contact patch will get wider but the center line of the patch will move inward, away from the centerline of the valve stem where it should be.
