American shakedown: Police won't charge you, but they'll grab your money

A variation of this was going on in the 60's in Pa. Rt 611 had some towns that would pull you over, take you in to the local JP. It would just so happen the fine was whatever was in your wallet. In 67 I was stationed in Ft Gordon Ga, we were warned about the towns in South Carolina on Rt 1, same thing! The GI's would wind up in the local slammer till the AG came up to spring them. It's probably run a little slicker today but all the crooks ain't in jail.

In the fall of 69 I was sent to a RADAR school at NAS Glynco, GA. I think it was Waycross? was in the news. The AAA had put up billboards to watch for the cops there. A friend on the bas had wrecked his car, left it for repair, and when it was done, some of us made a "weekend" and rode up N to get it and drive it back. I can still vaguely remember going through that small town. You came around a sharp curve, on a narrow road, over a tiny bridge, and past a tree, maybe a weeping willow. Hidden "in" the tree was the speed limit change and soon after sat........the town constable.

Our drive knew all this, and he was going about 20 WAY before he got to that bridge.
