Pan gaskets, safe/sorry

I was getting ready to install the pan on my mid 70's 360. I noticed that the side gaskets go all the way to the timing gear cover and the rear main. The curved end seals appear to have to on top of the side gaskets. (when the block is on the stand with the crank top) Is this correct? It seems like a lot to compress at the corners. It also makes sense that there is a reason the gaskets are made the way they are.
As in the title, I would rather be safe than have a problem at start up.
Thanks,
Mike
