Zinc Additive

Looking for input about the need to put zinc additive into the oil of a Slant6.

Primarily people that have not and what experience they have had with engine problems, or those that have and can give me some suggestions on the best brand of oil/additive to support the need.

Why not just use valvoline VR1 it has plenty of zinc for performance cams with stiff springs. You can get it in 10/30 and 20/50.
 
Higher levels of zinc and phosphorous adds greater protection then regular oil especially with solid lifter/roller cams with stiff springs or initial first run breakin of new engines, just keeps things from "grinding" together. the VR1 has about 1450 ppm of the additives and will work good for you as the post above recommended. If you need more info on this oil just simply google search for oils with higher levels of both zinc and phosphorous and read some articles. Hope that helps
 
Higher zinc & phosporous oils are good insurance for older style engines. Amsoil synthetics are a good option with a variety of high zinc oils to choose from.
No need for additives if you buy the right oil that's properly formulated by the manufacturer to begin with.

I use a half bottle of Lucas break in additive per 5 qts in my 350 and 318, both flat tappet. Back when I looked up the amounts I thought 1/4 bottle would do it, but for $10 a bottle I do half to be safe, and still way cheaper than these crazy priced "hot rod" oils. Works for me!

The VR1 usually goes on sale at autozone and napa plus other stores in April ranging right around $4 a quart. I'll give a heads up this spring!
 
All flat tappet cams need zinc infused oil or zinc additive. Period.
