How to tell 340 vs 440

Let's expand on this a bit. All "Big" blocks have the distributor in front. There are two major types, known as "B" and "RB." ONLY THE RB engines have the ID pad here as shown. "B" engines have the pad on the pass. side by the water pump

"B" engines are also know as short stroke or low deck engines. These date back to the first 350/361 Chrysler built, and were made also in 383 and 400

"RB" engines are known as long stroke or raised deck, or "Raised Block" (RB). They are substantially the same as the "B" engines except the cylinder deck is higher, and of course longer stroke. Most parts will interchange from the "B" to RB except for the intake manifold, pushrods, and of course crank, pistons, rods.
