Need some advise please.

Specs., 1964 Barracuda.......273 V8........manual brakes, stock.

Replaced the master cylinder with stock manual brake master. This leaked, between the master and the firewall. (Did a nice job on the fresh paint too, but......

Replaced it again. leaked the same way again. What am I obviously missing?

Just don't get it..........

Poor quality of master cylinder? Have you converted the car to a dual chamber master cylinder? They are much safer than the old single cup master cylinders are.

No on the dual, have been going for the original restoration. As for poor quality, that I can believe in this day and age.
What do I do to stop it from leaking?

Maybe I'm missing something here. These have been brand new master cylinders that leaked. Bench bled them both first before install.
I get the safety issue and the reason to go to dual. Thank you. I just can't figure out why they keep leaking.

Im stumped about this too, as there should be no fluid coming from the rear of the MC period! Must be a seal problem! I also vote for a dual res change, they're much safer! I used a dual chamber unit correct for a 69 Dart with manual disc on my 66, looks just like the original 66 disc unit!! I doubt that anyone would throw up a red flag about a conversion here, unless you're going to be concours judged!! Geof

I had a 1-yr old MC in my 65 Newport (original single-pot type) fail. The pedal sunk to the floor, but it didn't leak at the rear. I pulled the piston out and found the piston seal was cut. Everything was pristine inside, but the rebuilders had re-bored the cylinder, but didn't break the sharp edges at the ports. Different than your issue, but it does show poor quality control. I have a dual reservoir MC on there now (95-99 Breeze, w/ 2-4 adapter plate).

I used silicone fluid in all my non-ABS cars, so no concern w/ paint removal. When I bleed the brakes on my glycol cars, I save the fluid and use paint remover when restoring valve covers (soak rags, leave on top for a week in a plastic bag).

Thanks,
I appreciate your responses. I really did not want to pull the MC off again. However........ here we go again. :banghead:

I had a similar issue. Went through three of the rebuilt units before I wised up. The lifetime warranty means nothing if they won't last, especially with brakes. I finally took an old core I had laying around and ran a brake cylinder hone in it. With a rebuild kit from NAPA it has held up for a couple of years now.
