I have a 300hp crate 360 magnum that my father purchased brand new in 2002. This motor has around 20 thousand miles on it. I live in Idaho where in the winter temps can get as low as 30 below zero and winter is the longest season. Summer it can get as high 105. I have been running 5w-30 in it and I had some people at bob is the oil guy recomend running a 0w-40 oil.
My oil pressure with the 5w-30 is 20 psi hot in neutral 15 psi hot in gear and while cruising down the highway at 65 it's at 45-50 and it will go up to 60-65 psi when you poor the coals to it.
Should I stick with a 5w-30 or 0w-30 or would going to a 40 wieght oil be ok?

sounds like there is nothing wrong with what you are using..

While that's a big spread in pressure, it looks good to me with the 5w/30. I think the bearing clearance is a hair wide, but with a really good oil pump.

Is this a driver? And how often do you start, and run it, when it's below zero?

This engine sees very mild use all year long. I probly don't even put 5000 miles on it in a year. But I will drive it in the winter specially if the snow is thick and I need 4x4.
Like I said engine has about 20 thousand miles on it right now. And the first 3 thousand miles it got regular valvoline 10w-30 and then the rest of the time it's had valvoline synpower 10w-30 and 5w-30. Mainly 10w-30 though. I just started using 5w-30 in it this year and I notice slightly more oil pressure when cold but other then that it's no different from the 10w-30. And I have always used valvoline in it.
Since joining bob is the oil guy I have found it its best to run as thin of oil as you can on the winter number so on the cold start the engine is getting oil quicker. I have always ran a wix oil filter on this engine as well.

No need to church it up, Magnum's are still named Joe Dirt. These engines are meant to run on basic dyno oil, 10-30 works too. If you do synthetic, blend it 50/50 otherwise your talking leak city.

I've never had a leak running synthetic in this engine, that could be because it's had nothing but synthetic ran it after break in.

For starting in cold weather, nothing beats the synthetic for pour point when cold. The 5W30 syn will be good, I use that in North Dakota in all our rigs.
