On my 71 demon I replaced the stock alternator with a chrome Tuff Stuff one with the built on regulator. I removed the external regulator and the wiring installed the new alternator. I did not run a wire from the alternator to the positive battery post. Instead I used the stock connection from the alternator. Will this work? Or do I need to run a wire from the alternator to the battery for it to change?
Thanks for any input

It "will work" up to a point and after a fashion

The voltage drop (search some of my posts) that is LIKELY in your aged? original? wiring is likely to cause trouble

And.......if this unit is a larger output by substantial amount, you may have wiring issues "in a little while."

Start by reading this article as to the "why."

http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges.shtml

Even "Ma" knew this was a problem, because the larger 60+ amp alternators got upgraded wiring in what was known as "fleet wiring."

^^^ agreed. both bulkhead connectors, black in and red out, fusible link spade connector to red wire from ammeter are the ones that die first. and die as in melt and/or catch fire. in my rigs i deleted the red charge wire from ammeter to starter relay completely. also, i deleted the black charge wire from alternator to 5 inches from the bulkhead connector. installed 4 GA. braided stereo cable as a new charge wire from alternator, to starter relay, attached the original black charge wire to the starter relay lug (this is my dash feed, key, fuse box, etc) and did the same braided 4 ga. from starter relay to battery. i run a 60A in my dart, and a 80 amp squareback in my powerwagon. never had any charging issues.

Thanks for the advice. I will be making the changes this week

Wired it like you said and everything is working great! Thanks
