"SAMPLE" 1970 340 HP intake manifold number 3462848 rarity!

-
Bill I'm up here in Perry Ga. but I'm thinking about driving down in the morning. I've been going there and vending for a long time and this is the second year I haven't. I like to see Don also. I'm a small part of his history, I owned the only Garlits franchise in Temple Terrace Fl. from 73-76.

I've had it for about 10 years I guess. Knew it wasn't something that you run into everyday, so I bought it just to have......

Roy, hit me up if you do! I hope you still have my number! I haven't see ya in awhile now myself! And I didn't know about the franchise.........

How about pictures of the ports and the bottom?
Back in the 70s, a buddy of mine had a 67 Coronet with a 383 that blew a head gasket. When we pulled the intake we discovered that there were no exhaust crossover ports on the factory heads. We never could find out any information about them. We figured that they were left over experimental parts that made their way onto a production engine.

I will take some other pictures tomorrow. Too late and cold for me to run out to the shop tonight! lol

The 'R' casting 'date' was not uncommon, there are a few examples out there. SAMPLE is a unique stamp though. Why are these considered good, the runners look to be 90 degree trees? LD-340 looked much better for a 'factory' offered part.

The 71 intake is said to be the best. The sample tag is most likely just a QC thing, every 250 or so just guessing manifold that is pored QC would ask for a manifold to check quality of part and mold. We do this at my plant.

I have one that I found at a swap meet years ago in Englishtown. saw a few more over the years

I would like to see some pictures of all of these if they are so common.... Nobody else that I speak to has ever seen them. I guess the proof would be in the pudding!

If it was a quality control move, why would the change the mold to the "SAMPLE" mold to check it? lol

That would defeat the purpose of a QC now, wouldn't it? lol

They change the mold all the time, those tags were designed to be changed, ie date and time of day markings. I work at a few different foundrys, and the sample is most likely a QC thing.

I stand by my statement that I have never seen another one. Nor has anybody else been able to come up with one. So it doesn't sound like common practice to me. Hell, I would like to know it's something common so I could get rid of it!

It also doesn't have the Pentastar casting or any other markings, and it is in pristine mint condition....

Here's my 1970 340 factory intake. It is similar to yours without the "sample" marking. The date code is earlier than yours. No pentastar either.
