Lets say we have an engine with a tunnel ram intake manifold and 2 tunnel ram tops. One with a provisions for 2x4 and one with just 1x4.

The carb for the 1x4 manifold flows the same as the total of the 2x4.

So what is going to be better for performance? I'm guessing for a street machine there wouldn't be a big difference in power (just easier to tune 1x4), but what say you?

I'd say the single carb is easier to tune.
I think (as IMO) the twin carbs would be better since there centrally placed over each grouping of runners.

simple, use the one with 2 carbs, fueldistribution will be alot better. you will also have way better driveability with the ability to run on much smaller primarys during cruisingconditions. as for the tuningpart, its not hard at all, just look at the two carbs as one giant carb.

Could you run the 2X4 and only run one carb? That way you still get the cool look , but with one carb.

What is the point of doing that? tunnelrams with two carbs are not about looks.. but alot of people run them with linkages set up so they only run on the rear carbs primarys at low loads.

Fuel distribution would be terrible that way. If the carb used was in the rear the forward cylinders would run very lean.

Bingo! The fuel has to travel much further to get to the first and last 2 cylinders if a single carb is centrally located on the TR. I've had it explained like this:

What happens is exhaust reversion builds up in the corners and depending on the firing order and cam selection as to how serious it gets. It usually shows up at idle and the immediate response parts of driving.
