Went and looked at an engine that was listed on Craigslist yesterday. The listing said it was a 318 with a 904 transmission and the asking price was $100. Showed up at the address and the house seemed deserted and there was a for sale sign in the yard but there was a car in the driveway. When I pulled up a lady got out of the car and greeted me by name but I was still leery until we had talked for a bit. Turns out the house was her dad's and he had just passed away. Dad was a motor head and she was selling off his toys as executor of his estate.

Turns out the 318/904 was a 360/727 and I could have loaded them in the truck for a C note. Instead I showed her the difference and explained that a 360/727 was worth more than a 318/904 and why. Then we agreed on a new price.

Did I do bad and why do you feel that way???
 
I would have done the same. You did right. Did you buy them?
 
I would have told her that they are worth more but left my number so I could match the best offer given to her by others. Might end up getting them for $100 anyway!
 
Atta boy Grumpus a couple of extra hundred is a small price for the Karma of doing the right thing , really what kind of douche would take advantage of a bereaved next of kin .
 
did right thing. pay that if you want and can afford them. I hope they were in condition represented to you or what you expect.
over the years I've had people and call me up and ask me to buy a car or parts off them. they would price it to me and I'd say, " it could bring more somewhere." they wanted it sold then and there.
personally I doon't want to take advantage of anyone, but then too i'm not a wealthy philanthophist! (spelling?)
its great you did not take advantage of the lady. good deal..
 
You did the right thing

Too many people grieving gets taken.

Sleeping good at night is important, I don't know how some people can live with themselves
 
kudos but you dont know if it's working, or repairable, or beyond repair... not sure how to value that
 
You did the right thing. Honesty is always the best policy. You're both happy and she knows you're an honest person...it's a small world. Good job!
 
While I'm sure all of us have taken advantage of a good deal at times in our life. One thing I could NEVER do is take advantage of someone that is grieving over the loss of a loved one. It's just inherently wrong to capitalize under these circumstances and those that would are morally bankrupt.
I applaud your Honesty and Integrity.

ok so it was a 360/727 thats worth no more then $200 max as cores to me. hell i wouldn't have even wanted the 727. last three 360 motors i have sold i sold for $100.
 
Wish more people were like you, I have done same thing before. Good job, because if you wouldn't have came clean with the lady Karma would have gotya! LOL!! Still got a great engine and trans! I say well done!!!!
 
If we only handled every aspect of our lives the same. Too bad we don't.
 
Makes you wonder who told her it was a 318?Good thing to try to restore some faith in humanity.Sounds like you had the money and felt it was worth it.Both happy,I say it was a good deal!

Been wallering around with this lump until I'm just about wore out. The engine and trans was pulled from a running car (dad's '72 Challenger that younger brother rolled) 3 years ago and has been in a heated garage ever since. The engine is complete from air cleaner to oil pan, has the alternator, power steering pump, clutch fan, belts, hoses, all brackets, points distributor, coil, etc. The only thing missing is the starter and I have a feeling it wound up in the '73 Roadrunner on the other side of the garage. Pulled the valve covers and it has J heads. The transmission is just as complete. It's all there right down to the kickdown linkage and the floor shifter bracket. Looks like I could drop these in a car, top off the fluids, and drive away. Everything turns, twists, snaps back and generally behaves like it is supposed to. Based on the J heads, points ignition, and the big assed 2 barrel carb, I think this beast is a '71. Gonna need to wire brush a little more grunge to make sure. Hope it is since they will take more overbore than a normal 360. I don't think I got hurt in this deal since all I'm really interested in is the block and that leaves a lot of good parts to make my money back on...
