Looking for suggestions on getting the steering coupler all they way down on the steering box's shaft. I got it down about half way, just starting to see the indent where the roll pin will sit. Should the coupler slide right on or is there a trick?

Thanks!
Eric

I installed a tight one a few years back by first heating the crap out of it in my wife's oven to 250 deg.F. Needless to say I removed the box and took it into the kitchen first since the garage is 50 feet from the house.

Note. clean the grease out of it first tho.

Are you talking about that ridiculous POS box coupler with the T total PITA rubber cover with the chinsey *** clamp frame that holds it all together? Do yourself a favor and throw that thing in the ditch and get a real Borgesen U joint. That has to be the worst design ever. Somebody was smoking crack when they came up with that.

I don't install and column attach bolts because I don't want the shoes inside against the coupling bottom. That would limit the outer box movement. I stack shop manuals or whatever is handy in the drivers seat to hold the column up near the correct line. Grab the coupling with a gloved hand a shake it. Only safe place to peck on it is in the corner of the pin hole. We don't want to distort that lid.

I'm about to start working on my lower coupler soon. I got discouraged last year sometime. a lousy design for sure. I took the cage apart, and saw a pin pressed through the shaft. all I wanted to do was replace the rubber grommet securing the steering shaft from moving around. science mine is a automatic with a Column shift , I think its best to remove the whole column with cables and all. will have to use a press , or secure in a vice to remove the pin. will try to upload some photos , off my phone, when I figure it out. maybe somebody knows if I can keep the same column and buy a replaceable kit for the bottom 1/2 .wishful thinking....
