Are 1965 Formula S brakes the same as 1965 Signet convert 273 2 barrel brakes?

I believe the brakes are the same, most '65 & '66 Barracuda & Valiants with V8 should have 10 inch drum brakes standard and with disc brakes being an option.

Some early 65 Valiant's have the 9" drum brakes, even with the 273.

Probably. The center section would not have come in your car from the factory. A few 65 Barracuda's came with an 8 3/4, mainly 4 speed cars, 2 or 4 bbl, but it was optional.

And all this time I thought someone changed the entire differential assembly. I never stopped to think just the carrier had been changed, that is something to think about. It is an automatic transmission model. I wonder if the 8 3/4 option is noted on my build sheet somewhere? I see no self adjusters on the rear drums, only on the front. Only one rear drum has cooling fins. So the mystery continues.

Most of the 65's have had a 8 3/4 changed into them. I have a 65 Valiant Original Commando Convertible with auto car and it has the 7 1/4. I have a 66 Valiant Commando HT and it has the 7 1/4. I have a 65 Valiant 4 door, factory 273, 4 speed car and it has the 7 1/4. And a 65 Barracuda 273 auto and it came with a 7 1/4.
So chances are that yours was built with a 7 1/4. They were not known for their longevity. I had a built 318 in my first 65 Barracuda and put a 8 3/4 in it when you could find a complete one for $100. After 7 yeas I decided to sell it and pulled the 8 3/4 and put a 7 1/4 back in it. It lasted 2 weeks before I had to put the 8 3/4 back in it. The spider gears were in small pieces in the bottom of the casing.

489 centers did not come out until 1969, so that is definetly a transplant! Look for the location of the distribution block on the axle tube! Is it up on the hump of the center or down on the drivers side tube a couple inches! On the tube would be a 70 and later unit, on the hump would be 69 and earlier!

Thanks for the info. I never knew that about the vent tubes/dist. block.
